My senses tell me that if I live near/on the coast like I want to, it’ll be better to have a job at a boat engineering company than one of automotive engineering. I have an interest in boats but have little knowledge of how they work, sans the ICE.
The basics?
Important aspects to know?

They ought to float.

I don’t know if thats important to know more than just the basics. Friend got a design job at Boston Whaler with zero boats in his portfolio.

No replacement for displacement.

Boats are simple. All you have to do is go to your bank and empty all your accounts. Then proceed to throw all the money into the closest body of water.
That’s pretty much the basics.

Can attest, that is how it works, especially if the boat is Italian.

I genuinely dislike that my two favorite hobbies of interest, cars and boats, are two of the most expensive hobbies.

Starboard is right (facing front), port is left, bow is front, stern is back, the toilet is the head, the slower you’re going the harder it is to steer, getting it trimmed right is most of the battle to getting it to ride well, and never forget to put the plug in. That’s most of my boat knowledge. Oh also the floor is a deck and the ceiling is the overhead. There, that’s it. Six years in the Navy well spent.

Try getting into planes.

I've never been any sort of a plane-lop. Observation tells me that it's more expensive than boats and cars combined.

Well, that pretty much covers it.
Though you only truly learn these two steps by repeating them at least twice (sometimes four times if you’re a bit thick like me).

There are low end planes like anything else, but yeah, it gets expensive quick.

If you want to get into a naval architectural firm you at least need to have some AutoCAD or similar program background. That’s how I have my position. If you want to go higher, go to school for Naval Architect, that’s more numbers, weights, and ballast of the ship.

Make sure the trim tabs work. Also, electrical issues are a major problem. Most boats more than 5-10 years old are gonna have multiple issues.

If it’s on level with the rest of the deck, it’s a helm. If you have to climb up to it, it’s a bridge.

A boat has three main systems, a water tight hull, an internal combustion engine, an electrical system. At any given time at least one of these systems does not work properly.
