Whether or not you’ve seen it yet, (I haven’t! No spoilers!) it’s clear from the commercials that a very, very large part of NWA’s struggle was due to people wrongfully accusing them of being overtly violent and/or inciting violence. So it’s pretty ironic that, since 5PM Thursday night, (three hours before the first showing) there has been a constant police presence at my theater. At one point on Saturday, there were apparently ten police cars out front. Opening weekend arrest count: 0. Police intervention count: 0. Troublesome guests that theater security was able to deal with alone? 0. Just figured I’d share.
I understand that a lot of the fans of the group are probably troublesome, specifically those who actually embody their stage image, but our tax dollars could be put to better use than this. It’s some crazy bullshit here.
I guess it’s mostly due to the recent theater shooting, but still... They never needed to send more than one officer, and even that is excessive with mall security already on high alert.

So, deterrence worked?

You’re complaining about the lack of arrests and that deterance worked, there's no pleasing you people

I doubt it. The cops spent most (read: all) of their time chatting out in the mall where hardly anyone could see them. Some just waited in their cars for hours.

You can’t really prove that there was any “deterrence” involved here... The cops weren’t even in high-traffic areas at all.

No spoilers? Everything in it happened 20 years ago.
Wife and I went Sunday at 10 am and it was practically dead. Nothing special, no Police, no extra Security, nothing. My daughter went late Saturday and she said there were tons of cops.

So a police presence in a known area for things to go down stopped things from going down. Sounds like it worked. Deter the violence from happening not arrive after its already started

I always have to remind myself that common sense is not common.

Its nice being in a town with a median age of 69. The theater was practically dead and there was nothing to worry about.
Now up about 30 minutes north in a younger city i heard they had a lot full of cops

So basically the cops were there as a precaution so that if something did happen, they’d have a better chance of stopping it before hundreds of people are dead.
I don't see the problem.

LeVar Burton tweeted pretty much exactly the same thing.

Surprised I got no comments for saying you people

I’m sorry, but ten separate police cars is overkill.
![]() 08/17/2015 at 14:43 |

The problem is that 1) ten squad cars is overkill, and 2) they never do this for other movies.
Take Ted 2, for example... That was very popular among young, obnoxious teens. Not a single cop. This movie is popular among young, obnoxious black teens. Ten cops.
Call it deterrence all you want, but this is the same logic as me saying my shoelaces repel tiger attacks. I haven’t been attacked by tigers, so they obviously work!

Ted 2 isn’t a movie geared towards violence like Straight Outta Compton is portrayed, whether it really is violent or not. Look at the first shooting, that was at Dark Knight, another violent themed film.

Yea, just like Trainwreck!
![]() 08/17/2015 at 15:19 |

That’s only the first one to get mass coverage. Theater shootings aren’t all that uncommon, but they very rarely make the news because they’re easily stopped or prevented with regular security.
And the most recent one was at Trainwreck, so violence has nothing to do with it. Plus they’re never a spur-of-the-moment thing; these people just target opening night of any old movie so that it will be crowded.

Can’t remember what the other thing was recently that only you seemed to agree with me on, but you definitely seem to have the most sense here when it comes to some stuff. :P

Lol thanks, maybe it was Caitlyn Jenner related? I remember that discussion got ugly here and was part of the reason I don’t visit Oppo any more, I just follow the people I like. Got your back :)

I think there were more people on the right side of that one, luckily. I’m pretty sure this may have also been related to police and/or racism or something. I dunno. :P
But yeah, I keep forgetting that I lean way farther left than the rest of Oppo.
... And it’s still at least a million times better than the FP.

Not really. You can only have one offender per police car. So suspects cant help each other escape and such. Also depending on the size of the city 10 cars is not many at all. Especially when there are several thousand people at a theater and if something happens in separate areas they need to be able to have officers at each spot

The people here keep commenting to the effect of “Well, then it worked, because it deterred violence from happening.”
That’s pretty spurious logic, as it assumes that those seeing the film were intent on making violence in the first place. It was racist, because it associated a film about black artists with a type of crowd that would result in violence. That simply isn’t true.
I desperately try not to broach subjects of race, sexuality or religion here on Oppo, because I think it can lead to unproductive and offensive arguments. But I really wanted to get that off my chest.

LeVar Burton is the man.

I couldn’t agree more. You can’t prove a negative, so there’s absolutely no evidence that “deterrence worked.” That’s just assuming that these people were out to cause trouble in the first place.

Okay, but what makes this movie more prone to violence anyway?
![]() 08/18/2015 at 11:23 |

its a documentary about a group born from police brutality against a certain group. and with all the crap and police lately they did not want another incedent to happen

So it is because they’re black.
