Kinja'd!!!

The mistake I made was to point out that most “old school” muscle cars would be considered somewhat slow and wallowy if they were produced today, and I pointed this out on a “non-car” general internet website. So much ignorance and salt.

“MY MUSTANG WILL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR LITTLE JAP PIECE OF SHIT,” etc...

Which is funny because I was comparing them to the current Ecoboost mustang.

One guy keeps pointing out that it’s only faster because it’s a twin turbo V6 which, you know, at least he’s in the neighborhood, but he’s yet to figure out the ‘stang uses the 4 despite my many protestations to that effect.

We’ve also got the “It’s not about power, it’s about character!” which I do think is valid, but Turbo 4’s and big V8’s have remarkably similar torque curves these days.

This is why I like it here; there’s little to none of the typical “Brand A makes the best god damn cars ever! Brand B is only for queers and girls!” bullshit that you find elsewhere on the internet (not going to lie, it’s the worst with American brands. And Volkswagen. And Honda. And...)

Yeah, I’ve even stopped reading the comments on like Car and Driver and Motor Trend. Most are so ignorant and troll-happy that it’s painful to even read about 70% of them. Especially since most are just simple stupid things like:

“( insert car company here ) is awesome, ( insert competitor here ) is for gay queers”

“It’s not like the old one, it’s terrible! We live in a day and age where there’s too many nannies and gizmos! It’s all ( insert political figure here ) fault!”

or my favorite “Why doesn’t it have AWD, DCT, CFRP, and CCB? Cuz it sucks!!! FAIL!!!”

I came to the articles and forums to learn and discuss cars and cars things, giving out hatred over someone else’s opinion is weird.

Technology has moved on. What was fast in 1969 isn’t that fast now. Everybody still wants to stick to the “emissions and safety killed performance” line that was true 25 years ago. But it’s a different world now.

I know this is really beside the point and not even a reply to your comment, but... IMO the difference between rice and stance is that you actually see expensive cars dragging along the ground. Nothing trendy about the poors with $25 spoilers because those spoilers aren’t going on expensive cars. I never see anyone chastised for ridiculing rice, and there should be equal standards; people mock useless wings and loud exhausts because they don’t add functionality, but don’t dare patronize those who spend far more to detract from it. Rice is an epidemic while stance is a lifestyle in the same way that people working their asses off—for less than minimum wage in a strange land is an epidemic—while trust fund babies travelling the world and not giving a damn thanks to an estate going towards 0 productivity is a lifestyle.

The thing is a lot of modern cars will just as well (actually better in most cases) - but are safer, quieter, more fuel efficient, better handling, more comfortable, etc. And this isn’t even a comparison of fastest cars available today vs. fastest then. This is like Honda Accord V6 vs. GTO, Firebird, Charger, etc.

And if you’re comparing apples to apples, the average boring family sedan today will blow the doors off basically any V8 sedan from back then. It’s just no contest.

Except some of them will run low 10’s. While most engines were over rated with power, some were not. Some factory Hemi's literally put out 600+hp, in vehicles with less weight. But yes, they do everything else worse.

0 to 60 is a far more meaningful measurement of acceleration than quarter mile times (which are frankly not applicable to any real world scenario I can think of). And even if you stretch it to 0 to 100, a lot of the fastest cars from the 60s are still slower than modern ones.

I had the same experience when I was comparison shopping the Evo vs the STi. Local Subaru guy was a jerk. Bought the Evo instead. I can say though, say what you will about Mitsubishi quality, my Evo has held up very well. 12 years old, almost to the day of purchase, and 150k miles on it. Really, both were great cars though.

I’m assuming that type drives a 90’s Camaro. So if it makes you feel better his car’s rear end has probably rolled down my assembly line at least once and probably will again since it is essentially the same as those found in a postal truck.

Kinja'd!!! AdverseMartyr > Blondude

I would say the hate is reserved for excessive camber (and maybe stretched tires). Giving a car a good low stance is fairly appreciated, I think (unless the vehicle is designed to go off-road then the pitchforks and torches are out in force). And I think the hate is because the functionality of the car is damaged (meaning tires get destroyed, the body and frame drag.) We hurt when cars hurt.

We’ve had Chevy’s, I was far from insulted. I haven’t had a mechanical issue since August of 2012, and that was the standard 3VZE head gasket failure, then falling off of the harmonic balancer, which I believe was the mechanics fault. That’s pretty good for an abused vehicle from 1995.

I’m assuming a majority of the rear ends that roll past me are probably from businesses and people that have more money than sense. I say this because a majority of what I see are gm 8.6, 8.5 and 7.5. But the more money than sense aspect comes in when we see the Camaro 7.5’s and occasional Viper rear end come by.
