Oppo, your help is necessitated. A picture of a dog and horse for your trouble.
I thought I might enlist the collective brain power of the oppoverse to help me make a new workout playlist. I don’t want to blunt anyone’s creativity, so I will leave it open to any and all genres. You should know that I will be doing powerlifting, so that requires high effort over a short period of time, so keep the slow jams to yourself.
As an aside, what do other oppos do to stay in shape? I have been a runner most of my life (nothing longer than a half marathon), but I switched to lifting about two years ago. I like it. I follow the “go over show” doctrine, meaning I don’t much care how big my muslces are, I care about how much they can lift.
Aside number two: I live in China, so don’t expect any replies for the next twelve hours or so, I got’s to get to sleep soon.

Playlists are for cardio. I’m kind of partial to Outkast, even though I’m not a huge hip-hop fan. Also, old Chemical Brothers (Dig your own hole) are both upbeat and trancey at the same time.
Lifting demands focus — and part of the mental workout, for me, is drowning out the surrounding world and not relying on my music to do that for me. Plus, IMHO, it’s bad form because you can’t hear people around you — not just rude, but potentially dangerous when you lack situational awareness.
Or if you want a supreme challenge, listen to classical or new age while lifting heavy. It’s like adding 20% to the weight!

I run mainly put I would prefer to swim and do Judo.
For music I mainly listen to rock but I don’t run with music on because I run at the pace of the music instead of my proper mile pace haha.
The best “get pumped” song that was ever made though was Trapt - Headstrong. If it’s not on your playlist, you should change that.

I have been advised to listen to Chemical Brothers before, so I’ll definitely check them out.
As for listening to music while you lift, you obviously make a very good point. I can appreciate the idea of being courteous to other people, in fact I go out of my way to be as polite and accommodating to other lifters as I can (i.e. not throwing weights around and putting them away when I’m done, sharing equipment and just being a positive energy in the gym). Listening to music helps me get focused, and I lift better with it. I think that learning to find that focus without music will come with time, and I’m very open to the idea (I didn’t use music in past, but have been working out alone for over a year, so it helps). Thanks for the comment, as it never hurts to be reminded that you’re not the only person using the gym.
Oh, and I’ll throw some classical in there, just to keep me on my toes :)

DMX, 50 Cent, any of the “Gangsta rappers” are good for lifting IMO

I come from a swimming family (my sister set records at the Junior Olympics about a decade ago that are, to the best of my knowledge, still standing.), I was the only kid who chose to stay on land. Years of going to swim meets just to watch has given me a deep distaste for the smell of chlorine, as it reminds me of hour upon hour of boredom. Judo sounds awesome. I studied Muay Thai with a friend of mine from Ireland for a couple months this year. Decided that lifting gave me the same rush, but without the headache that came with getting punched in the head and having my ear drums burst by the occasional high kick. Judo might be a great in between (less blows to the head, if I’m not mistaken).
I know the pain of the music pace haha, it’s why I preferred to run with friends instead of solo with music (preferably friends that were faster than me).
Any rock in particular? Classic? Hard Rock? Swedish Murder Metal?

My playlist? Load industrial, punk, country, rockabilly, and ska onto my player and push ‘random’
But... for cardio or running pace, there are a bunch of database sites out there for searching songs by BPM.
Climber here, former (and still occasional - training for 10k) runner.

Agreed, my current playlist includes stuff by Chief Keef, Migos and Young Thug. That dumb ass hype rap. It might not be the most eloquent, but it sure as hell get’s the job done haha.

Thanks! I have no idea what some of those are, but I will surely google them and give them full consideration. I love ska, and I need more of it on my playlist. It has a more upbeat tone than the most of the other stuff I have. Too much angry shit and I get a bit...antisocial.

I’m more of an alt rock guy. I actually like bands where girls are the lead singers a lot.
Favorite of those are Tonight Alive and Icon for Hire
Other great bands are All Time Low, Taking Back Sunday, Falling in Reverse.
I turned down college scholarships for swimming to some pretty big name US colleges. I tore my knee senior/captain year of swimming and knew I’d tear it again so I wanted the best education, not best chance at swimming. Though I came back from the knee tear and dropped 20 seconds off my 100meter Butterfly in 2 weeks (which is why the scholarships weren’t dropped on me) I knew it would happen.
And it did. Twice in College. Once swimming again (breaststroke is terrible for knees) and once in Judo. The Judo one I had already done it twice so it was just weak.
Judo’s great - zero blows to the head, unless you just get dropped hard. There’s no striking of any kind, it’s more like martial arts wrestling than what most people think of. Let me know if you have any questions about Judo, I’m a 3rd Degree Brown Belt (only a couple notches away from Black)

You’re definitely right about that. I have some on my iPod already, just need to work it into the rotation.

I have listened to none of their music, but their album art has already made a fan out of me!

Haha, it’s one guy....22 year old from Edmonton, Alberta :)
I’ve got a lot of his tracks on my MP3 player for “nice day driving songs” :)

I stumbled upon this guy’s album, he makes really dramatic movie-trailer style music. It has some vocals but no real lyrics, but it’ll definitely get you pumped.

I’ve been in to 3 lift stuff for a while now and I have a constant rotation of hard rock and hair metal. I don’t listen to it outside of the gym.
At the USAPL meet a few weeks back it was all AC/DC, Metallica, Ozzy, and the like.
Any or all of Appetite for Destruction should be on everybody’s playlist.

Oh, oh, oh. I had not even considered something like this. I like it a lot, thank you!

Damn, I wish I could have gone to see the USAPL. Nothing gets me hyped to lift like watching the pros do it. That is exactly what I would expect them to listen to. Definitely in agreement with you about Appetite for Destruction. Axel Rose is an asshole, but that is an amazing album.

Thank you for the suggestions! The sister I mentioned before went and had shoulder and back problems, so this is a struggle with which I’m familiar. 20 seconds off of anything in swimming is insane. People rarely recognize just how little time separates the good swimmers from the great ones, and how hard it is to earn those precious fractions of a second.
I will give an earnest effort to try and find somewhere to train Judo in my area. I appreciate anything that requires discipline. The lack of head trauma seems like a huge bonus haha. Here’s hoping you get that Black Belt!

Best part is that it’s mostly amateur! Not everybody is throwing huge #s. Hell, most aren’t.

Thanks!
It’s a life goal of mine. If I trained as frequently as I did in college I’d probably be a 3rd or 4th degree black belt by now, I just have a family and a career now so I can’t. I do hope to get back into it soon and I plan on teaching my son as soon as he’s old enough. It’s the best workout I’ve ever had in my life. Discipline is key, it’s a sport that requires technique over strength.
Good luck and let me know how it goes if you give it a try!

That’s fantastic. I’m going to compete in my first meet in about 5 months, still doing mass gaining. Eating has gone from a pleasure, to a torture, but it will be worth it.

That. That is fanfuckingtastic. Thank you, sir. You are a credit to the powerlifting and Jalopnik communities.
