The story goes that the late lexicographer, Noah Webster, was once sitting in his parlour, osculating the maid in the belief that his wife was otherwise engaged at an alternate location. Unfortunately, though, his spouse returned unexpectedly and entered the room in which Webster and the maid were pursuing their amorous inclinations, exclaiming ‘Noah, I am surprised!’ Webster replied ‘No, my dear, I am surprised: you are merely astonished’.
