Not that you had time for it, but you missed taking the shuttle over to the Presidential and R&D galleries to see the XB-70.

Once they have the 5th hangar built, the 70 will be part of the main collection again. Glad to see the missile gallery is open again as well.

I used to volunteer there, but life’s been busy and I had to take a break for a while.

There is also the Packard museum downtown should you have the time on your way back home.

Plan on at least 2 full days to see everything in the collection. You also need to take a shuttle bus to get on base to see the Presidential and R&D galleries. They have the Kennedy 707 and the XB-70.

I’m assuming you didn’t go over to the X-plane hangar?

No time. They were closing up as we left. Kinda nice though had the place pretty much to ourselves for a couple of hours.

I haven’t been over to that hangar either, and it’s never been crowded when I’ve visited.

Most of that collection will move to the main campus once the 5th hangar is finished.

Sadly, there isn’t room for all of the X-plane stuff, and we will lose the very unique atmosphere over there. The R&D gallery is not roped off and the planes are packed tightly, so you get very close and personal with some truly exceptional aircraft. Add to that the smell of burnt avgas hanging on the air from all the years that building was actually used and it is a very different environment for a museum.

I’ve visited the NMUSAF twice before and I agree the atmosphere in the Experimental hangar is much different. Getting up close with a lot of the aircraft, such as the YF-23 or the YF-12 was something special. Knowing these precious aircraft are going to be cordoned off in the new hangar makes the moments I had in the old hangar, actually touching these aircraft, that much more special.

I live nearby and I’ve been to this museum countless times. It never gets old for me. SAM 26000, JFK’s “Air Force One”, is by far my favorite aircraft at the museum. Absolutely gorgeous machine. Can’t wait for it to be in the main museum.

Kinja'd!!!

Did you get a chance to take a look at the planes on display outside? The C-17 out there made appearances in quite a few movies. There’s a little camera painted on it near the nose for every movie it was in. Ironman, Transformers, and a few others.

Hope you enjoyed your time in Dayton.

I saw and SR 71 when I was younger at the Strategic Air Command Museum down in Omaha Nebraska. I remember being awestruck by it. Its pretty crazy because they have it dangling from the ceiling.

Considering it spent almost 50 years in the jungle after a crash landing, I think it’s going forward at a decent pace. They’re working on the wings now.

I really hope it does the airshow circuit when it's done. There is an EAA Fly In where I am that usually has some great stuff. Along with all of Paul Allen's "toys".

Its real.

The Me 262A on display was brought to the United States from Germany in July 1945 for flight evaluation. Restored by the 96th Mobile Maintenance Squadron, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas, in 1976-1979, it is painted without operational unit markings as an aircraft that has just left the production line.
