but can you do helical sweeps for the threads?

HOW ABOUT I HELICAL SWEEP YOUR THREADS!

Oh, Blender’s UI. First time with it, spent an hour trying to make the ten or so accidentally-opened viewports go away.

(Only needed it to try and smooth out a sdlprt.)

in simplest terms a helix is a 3d shape, like a screw thread for example

best described mathematically with cylindrical coordinates, r, theta (in radians), and z. A vector equation for the position threads would be

s(t)=< r , 2*pi*n*t, t>

r is constant (it doesn’t have to be in you want a funnel shape) the diameter of your thereads for this example

n will define your threads per unit length

t, the variable, will be the length of the threaded section of the bolt.

A sweep basically means taking a shape and extruding it along a path, in this case the helical one described above.

Blender does it’s best to punish first time users, lol. Can’t argue with the price though!

I know what a helix is. I honestly thought this was application-specific speak. If you’re only talking about the screw cap on a soap bottle, that’s a lot of minutia.

Sounds like a good time to me. ;)

Also, this made me laugh so hard that my coworkers are looking at me weird.

basically I was just joking about the difference between graphic’s design centric modeling programs and engineering design centric programs

a well defined helical sweep like I wrote an equation for is likely something his program would struggle to do. While getting that complex contoured shape is something that is a struggle to do in my program.

Well bring your smart on over to my place then. I’ve got the full tap ‘n die set and a gallon of penetrating oil. We could be fixing helical threads and taking out stripped bolts with worn heads aaaaaaaalll night loooooong...

...for $30/hr labor, of course.

Nope! Helix structures and screws are easy to do in blender. You can pretty much get whatever shape you want.
