In yesterday I was cycling back to home. I was making a fast sprint to get out of the way as I saw that a bus was approaching from behind. Another cyclist was going to the same direction but he was riding on separate bicycle path in the right side of me. When the intersection was approaching he decided to make fast left turn and use the crosswalk in front of me.
I had no time to react in any way and hit the middle area of his bicycle. I flew over my bars and had small time to think about the upcoming painful landing. Without any body control I landed face first but rolled over my head and then landed on my back while hitting my head again against the tarmac.
I noticed that my helmet had stayed where it was supposed to be and my head was ok. Part of my face and butt felt quite painful but I was able stand up and fetch my eyeglasses that were laying several meters ahead. The other cyclist had survived pretty much unscathed. My lip was bleeding a bit not as badly as I was thinking from the pain. My bicycle was completely ok but his front wheel was slightly bent. He was very sorry about his mess up and I wasn’t angry.
We just said goodbyes and I started limping home. My butt was hurting quite badly and I was barely able to overcome the hills on the way. Climbing stairs was also very difficult.
My elbow lost some skin but my clothes had survived unscathed. The reason why my butt hurt so much seemed to the bicycle pump that was in my bag. The pump had flattened very badly. Sitting on a chair is quite hard today.

Sorry to hear about your accident but I’m glad you are OK.
PS your helmet is “done”. Depending on the manufacturer you might be able to send it back for a discount on a new one.

The helmet looks still pretty good. It’s made of semi hard styrofoam and upper part is covered by plastic film for appearance. I have try to try to bend it with my hands to see if there is some hidden cracks.

“hitting my head again against the tarmac.” Helmet. Done. Don’t risk it.

Not trying to tell you what to do as I wasn’t there, but if the helmet absorbed any impact it’s done-zo. The foam cells compressed.

Sorry about that, shit like this will happen. DO NOT BEND BACK YOUR HELMET. It is not safe anymore. Call Giro or Bell or whoever and tell you were in a crash and they'll get you one for cheap. Not kidding. It's like seat belts and car crashed.

They’re designed to take one hit and deform...if you landed head first, the foam has deformed and won’t be able to take another hit without transferring the energy to your head.

If you've got insurance/money I would suggest an x-ray of your low back, just to be sure. I landed similarly on (off?) a snowboard once and after a week of what felt like muscle pain, discovered I had fractured L3. Not that they can do much for it but it would be better to know now if you end up with future issues.
