I am looking at doing my first autox next weekend with the CSCC. They offer a practice day on Saturday, and a competition day on Sunday. I can only attend one day. My main concern is driving time. Which day will offer the most driving? I do not care about earning points.

It varies by region/how many cars show up, even then it’s a toss-up to know how many runs you get. I imagine you’ll get more Saturday. If you can get an auto-x vet to run with you that would be a HUGE plus.

Yeah generally less people show up to a test n tune, so it should get you more driving time

That makes sense. Thanks!

Hopefully I can meet someone there that will spare some of their time. I’ve done track days, but I feel like autox is completely different. Will definitely need someone to stay competitive.

Saturday, for sure. I’ve been to sessions like that where they even break down the track into sections for repitition and critique, like going through a slalom 10 times and having someone say “ turn in sooner on the right hand side, your right wheels are still a foot off the cone “

It IS completely different. Similar, transferable car control skills but different. Walk the course, several times. Commit it to memory. Drive it slower than you think you can the first, second and 3rd times. The speed will come as you learn. You can’t learn if you get lost or blow a bunch of cones over trying to set your fast lap in the first run.
Ride with an experienced autocrosser. Let them ride with you. Ask questions. Try things. What is right for Joe Mustang may not be right for you.
Track laps are like walking to the bowling alley. Lots of time to work on perfection. Autocross is like the walk to the foul line as you throw the ball. Very little time to work on perfection and “poof” its all over. Get it right and you get a strike, or a good, cone-less run.

Calgary Sports Car Club? If so the Saturday practice will probably have lighter attendance, but it runs just like a normal event, so that’s the opportunity for the most seat time.

Actually the California Sports Car Club. I forget there are other places outside my bubble. That makes sense about Saturday, though. Thank you!

That kind of instruction would be invaluable!
