I feel this is a safe place, so I’m going to let it out.
I do not like the BRZ/FRS/GT86. I just don’t. I was kind of excited for them at first. But now when I see one on the road, it just makes me think of this....
...or one of these...
It just seems like a boy racer car to me. I know there are some on here that own/have owned one. But hey, I don’t make your car payment, so why does my opinion matter, right?
Whew, now I feel better. Thanks for listening!
DAMN YOU KINJA FOR MOVING MY PICTURES AND TEXT ALL AROUND AND MAKING MY POST ALL WONKY!

I drove one. Power is decent, but the steering and chassis are pure magic. I understand it now. I want to buy used one and turn it into a dedicated track car.

Drive one yet? I had absolutely zero interest in buying a two door, two seat (the back seats truly are absolutely useless), four cylinder sports car. Now a BRZ is my daily.

Can I tell you something? I agree. I have two of these in my neighborhood, and I just can't get into them every time I look at them.

I don't think the looks are aging well but the car itself still appeals to me.

I kind of figured that would sway me a little. But still...it just does not look appealing to me at all.

So what?

I mean, everyone has an opinion. Yours just happens to be wrong.

It definitely has the boy racer image.
The FR-S/BRZ crowd is probably the thing I like least about owning one. The majority of owners make us all look bad. However, once you get it into any racing environment (autocross or track) you will realize how great of a package it really is. Toyota and Subaru have definitely recaptured what made so many Japanese sports cars in the 70s, 80s, and 90s fantastic. Light, RWD, excellent handling, and a truly connected feeling to the car.
The article Patrick wrote about it, where he basically said that when you drive one you neither get it or you don’t, was 100% correct.

I honestly thought the 86 twins were great cars but would have mediocre interiors and ricey looks. But after riding in one for a bit and getting up and close to one in a very good color, my opinion definitely changed. It's definitely one of my favorite new cars out there. That lava orange for the FRS and world rally blue on the BRZ are just gorgeous.

I will be a great 3rd owner of an FRS/BRZ someday lol. I think it would be a much better option than a Miata as a dedicated track car. Much easier to just have a roof for that!
![]() 07/30/2015 at 15:54 |

Are they in silver or black? Those colors are just nothing special on that car. The red, blue, and orange ones are the bomb.
![]() 07/30/2015 at 15:55 |

I think both are in black.

Two years of ownership and I love mine more than ever.
It’s really fun to drive if you actually know how to enjoy a car beyond just mashing the go pedal.
It’s a great daily driver for a single city dweller like myself.
It has been bulletproof for reliability.
It gets good mileage
It’s a good looking car, and that’s not just my opinion, but is reinforced by the comments strangers make about it on a fairly consistent basis.
It’s the perfect car for autocross because it’s RWD, manual, and not overpowered, and it’s competitive in the classes or qualifies for.
It’s a great platform for tuning, with great aftermarket support. If the car isn't quite what you want, you can make it so. 250hp, 300, 400, rumours of up to 600hp on stock internals. Or swap it if you want.

I look at it and think, yeah but the roof goes down on an mx5 and it’s easily as fun.

I still disagree on the back seats being useless. I sat in the back along with a car seat for over an hour, and it wasn’t that bad. I was 6’ and 245ish at the time, so I’m not a small person.

The GTS was a pretty great little car for its day as was the original TC, but the 86 leaves them behind in general philosophy and spirit. its okay to not like them though.

Try sitting back there when I’m driving ;) Unless you have knees that fold backwards you will be in for a bad time.

If they had made a shooting brake version I probably would have gotten one, I just need at least a little practicality, even though the FiST is hardly the most spacious of vehicles...

The rims that they decided to ship them with are probably the worst aspect of that car, why they couldn’t have thrown on a decent looking wheel I’ll never understand, much as I don’t understand people who don’t instantly replace them with a better style.

Ha yeah this is a good point, I could see my wife enjoying a ND Miata far mor as a second car than the twins, as a convertible is just so nice for weekend getaways.

Okay. Please elaborate on what you do like.
![]() 07/30/2015 at 16:48 |

The MX5 is a bit less practical though. Having back seats is essential for me, even if they are painfully uncomfortable.

My cousin was driving who is also 6’, and adjusted forward he had enough room to shift and drive comfortably.

I like that they exist. However I wouldn’t buy one. To me it feels like it’s 5k too expensive and needs another 5k in upgrades in wheel and tire area to be competitive.

I agree, the red looks fantastic. ;)

Honestly, I don’t mind the stock wheels that much. They aren’t great, but I don’t think they’re as terrible as everyone says. In fact, I almost prefer to see them on a the car over another FR-S/BRZ rolling around on RPF1s (unless it’s racing) or 57DRs. I swear, everyone has those two wheels or something by XXR or Rota. -_-

What color BRZ?

I ran an NB for three years as my daily, through british winters and can categorically say I wouldn’t have had more fun in the twins, cold nights and early morning top down runs are bracing and fun. It also adds to the experience having the wind in your hair and you are able to hear the peppy engine better.

Second/weekend car, failing that I owned a mx5 as my only car for three years and coped fine, it was a bit annoying sometimes only having two seats but it was a blessing other times. but they can be surprising practical at lugging stuff.

We have a BRZ on the lot and I wish I could buy it!!!

Right...
Because hardly any of those you listed are any less boy-racer than the FBRSZ?
Go drive one. Then if you don’t like it, you can say you didn’t like the way it drove. Saying you think it’s trying too hard isn’t really valid criticism.

Same, I’ll buy one in a few years, throw a turbo on it, and drive the hell out of it.

The only one that I have been in had 12k in upgrades including a supercharger and it was fantastic. However, it was barely usable as a DD. Before it had the upgrades it was still fun, but you have to be able to appreciate “slow car fast” driving.

Are those the Apex Arc-8s? I really like the way they look on these cars.

They are, they are basically a perfect fit on these cars. Only come in 17x9 but they look awesome in larger sizes
