I’m interested in where the hell this guy lives that they get snow and no one has winter tires.

America? Like 5% of the population will use winter tires in the winter, and 1/4 of them will use winter tires in the summer as well.

In Indiana we get very inconsistent snow from year to year, so winter tires are kind of an issue.

Idk, in Illinois a lot of people seem to be pretty keen on using dedicated winter tires.

Yeah... Here, you really need winter tires in order to survive the winter.

Honestly, I don’t think he’s a troll. I think he wandered over from one of the other kinja sites, which are pretty much all bastions for the worst people on the internet, and thinks he can talk cars because “I do care about sports cars, or at least I used to as a teenager and I just bought one, but it’s front wheel drive.”

I’m curious what kind of FWD sports car he drives.

It’s pretty normal in much of the world, including large parts of the US. I live in London - the one in England - and it snows a bit most years, some years as much as an inch settles for a day or two, and that’s about it. Once in ten or twenty years we get a few inches, and/or it sticks around for a week or so.

Michigan? I’ve been passionately rebuffed by other Michiganders for even suggesting they use snow tires. It’s like they think needing dedicated tires to survive winter implies they’re incompetant drivers or something.

In PA, I only know a handful of people that use them. I also have a tendency to look at tires, parking lots, stoplights, etc., I don’t know why, and it doesn’t seem that most people use them.

Fair play, but he said he had to push his mum out of a snowbank once a week, so I’m going to assume it’s a state that frequently gets snow. In London, yeah, I don’t see a whole lot of sense in it because, as you said, it doesn’t snow much. But in a place where snowbanks pile up? I think you’d have to be an idiot to not drive on them.

Maybe the better question is how is this guy not greyed on the front page? I had to beg Patrick to ungrey me, and yet we still have guys like this and the burner spammers who show up . makes no damn sense.

As for the snow tire debate, people just don’t understand. I have had them for my last three vehicles now. With as cheap as a set of steelies and snow tires are for most vehicles, its stupid not to invest in a set. Unless you just want to spend that money anyway on your insurance deductible when you inevitably slide into another object.

I guess it depends on how well the road crew does. Here, they do a pretty good job of keeping the road clear, usually only a few hours after the snow stops. And the few times a month you do have to drive in the snow/slush, decent all-seasons work fine.

Kinja'd!!! Chris_K_F drives an FR-Slow > BigBlock440
07/30/2015 at 14:39

Kinja'd!!!0

You can certainly get by on all-seasons, particularly in a FWD or AWD car, and most people tend to. However, I feel like I’ve seen an increase in dedicated winter tire users in the last year. Maybe it’s the worsening winters. Absolutely everyone should run actual winter tires in a state like Illinois though, seeing as your tires are the most influential component in your vehicle’s safety.

It’s the climate, too. We’re pretty good at clearing here, but we get about two metres of snow a year and crews have to cover 2700 square kilometres of city. And the slush and the ice and -30/-40 degree temperature doesn’t help, either. Right across the border, Quebec law states that you are required to have winter or all-weather (think a slightly more weather inclined all season) tires by December 15th, which is a law I wish we had here in Ontario.

I wasn’t arguing against snow/winter tyres, just pointing out that there are plenty of places that you get a little snow, and don’t really need cold weather tyres - as well as the places where you definitely do. Presumably there must be places in the middle where it’s a marginal decision either way.

Oh, I understood your point, I was just pointing out that from what he said, he doesn’t appear to be in multiple places.

And yeah, there are probably places in between. I don’t know whether it would be wiser to spend the thousand bucks and be safe or to just save it for other things in those cases.

We get an average of 50 inches here, so slightly less, but all seasons work fine when the road’s cleared for 90% of the winter. Slightly warmer here too with a low of -21F this past winter.

Fun fact, -40 is the same temperature regardless if you use C or F (just did the conversion to see)

I think he’s just dumb.

I went out driving in a blizzard for fun with some friends from my car club. Passed plenty of AWD and FWD cars/crossovers that were stuck, and my little FR-S just kept motoring and applying ample amount of oppo around the turns! haha

Kinja'd!!! CB > BigBlock440
07/30/2015 at 14:54

Kinja'd!!!1

Yup, that fact I knew. But once again, I think it’s probably better to err on the side of caution. Maybe it’s just where I’ve grown up and that I’ve had to drive through a handful of bad snowstorms (like the one that screwed Toronto in 2013), but that’s how I see it.

“And yeah, there are probably places in between. I don’t know whether it would be wiser to spend the thousand bucks and be safe or to just save it for other things in those cases.”

Well, if the answer’s clear, you’re not right in the middle :)

For what it’s worth, even if London got quite a lot more snow, I wouldn’t bother with winter tyres. I don’t drive many miles, don’t commute in the car, so if the conditions are bad I can always leave the car at home.
