In just a few months, Bombardier will finally deliver its first CS100 model to Swiss Airlines, but is it too little, too late ?

Kinja'd!!!

The twinjet narrow-body medium range airliner will finally hit the market 3 years late and 2.5 Billion Dollars over budget, which is echoing the company’s incompetence in trying to compete against established players like Boeing and Airbus.

Firm orders are stalling since 2014, and it looks like most airlines have lost faith in the project. Why would they take the risk of the plane being delayed for another year while they can go to their local Boeing dealership and buy a sweet 737 off the lot ?

Bombardier is facing rough decisions if they want to survive, they will need to sell way below sticker price, give free maintenance for 4 years, a 10 years warranty and offer 0% leasing to lure potential customers.

Another odd decision is to offer the CS100 model. Most CS100 firm orders have already been converted to the larger and better CS300 that will only start shipping in 2017. People like bigger numbers, because bigger is better. BMW is once again renaming its 3 series models to 330i and 340i, and the most expensive coupe version is already a 4 series.

Boeing and Airbus understand that very well, all their new models are -800 or -900, even for brand new design such as the 787 and the A350. The CS100 would have sold better if it was named CS800,to be more in line with the competition. No one wants to be seen flying in a low end plane.

The Cseries is probably a good plane, but after so many delays and issues, notably with the engines, customers are worried. If the Cseries fail, it’s Bombardier altogether that may crash to the ground. The next few months will be critical for the embattled Canadian plane maker.

Here’s hoping for the best, but Bombardier should stick with turboprops.

What kind of options are Bombardier offering, and do they have any good incentives? I usually wait until they have a bunch sitting on the lots so that I can get a better deal, but maybe the deals are already out there.

So should I just get an off-lease CPO one in a few years with only a few hundred thousand air miles on it?

I don’t why when you can get your hands on a proper DC-10 for much less

Why buy a Civic when you can have this Bombardier CS100 for less?

It’s newer and probably comes with the features I like. Can you even get Bluetooth in a DC10?

But a CS100 is gets better fuel economy, is more reliable and cheaper to maintain!

They have been working on this one for a long time. I hope it does alright for them, but it will be a tough road. The choice of using a composite wing and aluminum-lithium skins were big challenges for a company their size. They aren’t wrong that there are needs for 100-120 capacity aircraft, but there is a lot of squeeze from the 737 and A319.

Fun fact, I got to fly a very early simulator for the aircraft about 10 years ago during an air carrier focus group. It had large windows and that was nice, but it wasn't probably the most representative of the actual flying qualities.
