Late night Craigslist crawling led me to search the terms “ran when parked.” Then I found this 1951 tandem axle GMC which was honest-to-god running fine immediately before three trees grew up through its frame. What can you find in your area?

I'd sure hope it ran when parked, since it looks like he drove it home from the dealership and parked it right there in 1950.

Is it bad that I’m now looking at cars to buy and get running instead of laughing?

My favorite part of this one is he’s looking to sell it to someone who will “fix it up”. Because there is a market for 80s Caravan conversion vans.

Good call! I didn’t even read the ad that closely!

Looks like it could clean up decently, the wheels are freaking rad, and you get two cars for the price of one. If you can fix it with the parts car’s pieces, then do a little cleaning/waxing, you could conceivably resell the good one pretty easily and scrap the other shell, possibly doubling your money.

Believe it or not, if the 308 shell is a Mera one, you have a collector’s item on your hand that’s already appreciating.

Dear Santa, this year I want my Christmas present early. I’d like a plane ticket to Florida, a new hatch and window trim for a ‘78 Corolla wagon, and a barrel of money.

Oh man, this guy doesn’t know what he has. Play it cool so he doesn’t jack up the price...comes with a green garden hose, looks like 20 feet at least.

Brand new 33” tires for a chassis with no transmission, transfer case, or drive shafts (or roof, or title, or a snowball’s chance in hell).

I can’t help but wonder, what would possess someone to park a perfectly driving car in the woods for 20 years?
![]() 07/30/2015 at 15:00 |
|
The seller says it is more like five or six years, but maybe paint, or the interior.

Just based on my own experiences. When a seller says “ran when parked”, and it’s in a garage they might be telling the truth. Sometimes something as simple as a dead battery not being replaced leads to the carb getting ruined, etc. Next thing you know it’s been 10 years. When a car has been put out to pasture though, 9 times out of 10 there’s a major problem. Like it only goes in reverse, it has a cracked head, had rod knock...etc.

I parked a car for a few years once. It ran, but the boost pump was bad, and it spewed gasoline from the fuel tank when running. Also the bushings were gone, the steering rack was kaput, and the brakes required you to stand on them to effect any kind of deceleration. But it drove onto the trailer when I sold it for $500!
Uh, don’t ever buy somebody else’s first car.

The 1.8L V6
It’s about the only good thing left in it. Not a straight body panel left. I finally got a key for it so I’m gonna get it running so I can sell it. Should only need a battery and service though.

Man, the 90s were weird times. If an automaker today said “We’re going to make a three-door compact with a 24-valve V6 engine displacing 1.8 liters,” we’d all flip out and worship them for their audacity.

haha yeah. The car wasn’t a bad thing when it was going. I wish I had the time/patience to put that engine into something truly light. The MX3 isn’t heavy by any means, but it’s still a little too much weight for that engine to really shine.
The owner put straight pipes on it so it sounds fucking amazing... you just don’t go anywhere in a hurry.
