Here are the requirements:

Manual

Less than 10 years old

Available in U.S.

At least 21 mpg combined (but more = better)

AWD/4WD

Able to go soft-roading/moderate off-roading

Four doors

Room in the back for long (week+) road trips and the ability to carry large objects (ideally something with a hatch-style trunk)

Not a crossover (though if you really want to go for challenge points you can try to convince me I should consider a crossover)

Preferably quick, at least for something that meets the other bullet points

Fun

Decently reliable/affordable to maintain

Unless you just want to get a Subaru and be done with it, you just described a crossover. No body-on-frame SUV gets at least 21 MPG and is quick.

I know you’re right, but I’m one of those who, thanks to seemingly every other car on the road being a crossover (and usually a mediocre one at that, looking at you Murano), has developed a pathological dislike for the segment. Any crossover you would suggest?

I am looking for something similar. If you don’t mind waiting for non-Subaru/Saab or options I found are the 2008 Audi A4 Avant, 2007 Volvo V70 R, or maybe Volvo V50 from same period. That’s my price point though.

In either case, I forgot they don’t make manual F-150s anymore (haven’t since 2008) so that disqualifies it unless he’s okay with the really slow V6 manual.
