My rear diff cover is stuck on my 99 wj grand Cherokee. I got all the bolts off but it looks like the last guy bought his gasket from rtv. Thing will not budge. I’ve hit it with a hammer, tried to hammer a flathead in between the cover, taken a putty knife to all the excess, put my breaker bar in the fill hole and tried to pry it loose. Nothing works.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried a utility knife between the cover and housing?

Have yet to find something this won’t work on when two surfaces are stuck together.

How much do you value your putty knife? If the answer is, “not a lot”, then they *can* be hammered on. Somewhat. Even better if you can crack the handle off and hammer the edge directly. This is assuming your flathead is just a hair too big to really gain proper entry, and your putty knife isn’t, though the screwdriver is more likely to cause permanent damage anyway.

Don’t go nuts with the flathead. If you bend the gasket flange you can have sealing issues.

In bad cases I’ll take a utility knife and work the blade around the cover and then try the flathead or I’ll hit the cover with a drift and a hammer from the back side of the flange.

its a semi floating axle right? have you taken the load of the axle shafts by pulling out the circlips or at least taking the wheels off and raising the axle? could be that the 3rd member is just bound up and wont move.

EDIT: Nevermind, I was thinking of a different 3rd member setup.

brass drift and hammer on the flange sounds like the way I would go.
