We could use a larger family hauler than either of our current rides can provide. The current rides: 2014 WRX premium 15k miles and 2006 Escape V6 XLT AWD 92k miles. I made the following proposal to my wife: trade the WRX in for a Flex, and trade the escape and any balance from the WRX in for an older WRX. I still get my WRX and she gets a nice new family car. She said no, with the FLex being ugly.

The facelift one is kind of ugly. I prefer the pre-facelift.

My other half really wants a Flex. I’m open to it. It would serve all her kid hauling, rally sweeping, and Pennsic war wagoning needs, plus it could tow a rally car someday. Our biggest problem has been finding one at the lower end of the possible price range. We don’t need all the bells and whistles, and if she had $50k to blow she’d just get the Tahoe she really wants but can’t afford.

screw it get the flex for your self and ditch the wrx. Get the turbo 3.5 awd model an pump any left over cash into performance upgrades. like the guy with the 500+ hp SHO but with a flex!

I’d rather have the family car be the nicer newer vehicle, two car payments are not possible.

See if your wife will go for the older one, unless you are buying new. If not, keep fishing (for a car, not a new wife)

I actually got my wife to admit she liked the Flex, but we got a 10 year old Sienna instead because the practicality of sliding doors and monster space are hard to deny. If you can find a good Bugeye or facelifted WRX wagon, that’d make a great daddy car. I wish I still had my old ‘02 wagon for that purpose.

How much seating room do you need?

Towing concerns?

Active sports kids with big hockey bags?

Long family road trips planned?

I am in the exact same boat. With our newborn here my wife’s Corolla has to go but my A4’s lack of reliability is causing issues as well. We’re looking at a CX-5 for her and that leaves me needing a reliable commuter.

6 minimum seats, 7 perfered. no towing, the kids (2 girls) are 3, so dance in the biggest thing so far. we go to NH every summer, we took the WRX this year. It worked but it was tight. The main thing is being able to go somewhere and be able to have other people in the car so 2 cars are not neccesary or if they eventually have friends over, if each has a friend that 6 people in the car.

I dig the Flex, but if she doesn’t then you’re kind of SOL there. How about a Transit Connect Wagon? Would that work for her?

And get a Forrester XT for yourself.

14MY or newer Durango. I’ve done trips with 6 adutls, comfortably too.

If you want fuel economy get the V6, if you want power and aggressive looks get the R/T trim (personal favorite)

I say 14MY because that’s when the refresh came out with new interior/exterior and 8 speed transmissions. Also I did a lot of development work on that with the Grand Cherokee so I promise I know a lot about it.

They tend to leak. My mother had a 2009 which developed a massive mold problem in the headliner, so she had to trade it in. It seems to be a well documented issue.

The Explorer is a good option too. My Mom bought a 2012 and has put on about 60k miles pretty much problem free.

The Flex she had before it was a far better at being a road trip car (seriously it was amazing at that) but it is a bit long for everyday driving.

Team wife, here (sounds like she needs some defending). The Flex is FUGLY. With capital letters.

If I needed that much interior space, I'd be looking at a Highlander (which is maybe possibly going to be the new Tribeca too, I hope).

When wives have made up their minds, it is best to let them have their way as long as you aren’t stuck with the consequences. I tried to convince my wife that a Flex or a minivan would be a better choice. She stuck to her guns and bought an Explorer. Now she has decided that the Explorer wasn’t a good choice.

I had to drive the Explorer a couple of weeks this summer. She drove my WRX. I had a hard time getting my keys back....

When we were car shopping I tried sooo hard to get my wife to look at at teal 08 Flex. I love the praticallity of the Flex, but she said the same thing “it’s ugly”. she also said “It’s a “cool Dad” car not a “hip young girl car”. I’d have to agree with that. if I had kids I’d totally get myself a Flex as a DD, but I’d need a Miata or old Civic to off set it’s size, and lack of third pedal lol.
