My friend will be moving to the U.S. soon to study in UPenn. The last time she went to Freedomland was ten years ago as a child and now remembers very little, so she’s a little clueless. If there are any Philadelphians around here, what advice would you give to someone moving there for the first time? What kind of things should university students be looking out for in and around the area? Your help is much appreciated!

A very pretty Ferrari for your gracious time.

Philly is a great city with great people. I enjoyed my time there. UPenn is also a very good school as I’m sure she knows. There’s a lot to do in the area and she’s right there in the middle of it. Public transit (SEPTA) is ok. Not great, but passable.

She does need to be aware that UPenn is close to some rough parts of Philly so she should be aware of her surroundings when walking around at night. Don’t be scared to go out and have fun, but be aware that if you get hammered drunk and try to walk home at 2am you may have trouble.

I don’t live in Philly, but I work there. So I have at least some idea of the city.

Septa (Public Transit) is okay. It’s great if you want to go into Center City, hit or miss for everything else. Taxi drivers don’t seem to have much of a clue either. Take away their GPS’s and they’re completely lost.

The Pope is coming on September 26th to the area, and it will be a giant clusterfuck as far as people and traffic. If she does take the subway or busses, she won’t on this day. They’re holding ticket lotteries because of how many people there will be.

UPenn campus is really nice, but stay on campus. Unfortunately as is the case with a few of the universities in the city, the campus is great, and the surrounding area isn’t.

Safe places to hang out (for the most part) Center City, Stadium area (south philly). Places to avoid North Philadelphia. At all costs.

Don’t be afraid to ride the Septa buses. They are pretty convenient and serve the gaps in the train lines. Uber service is pretty good too. The night life is fun in University City, but the drinking age is 21 in the US so she might not be able to get into the clubs or smaller concert venues.

It’s also a great place to stage trips all up and down the East Coast from. Bus tickets to NYC run about $15, a little more for DC or Boston. There is also cheap NJ Transit train service to Atlantic city on the coast.

Philly is a pretty city and I miss it dearly. I can’t wait to move back to the area in January.

“but the drinking age is 21 in the US”

Everywhere? Doesn’t sound much like their much-vaunted freedom.

Haha yeah everywhere since the early 80s at least. It’s also widely disregarded, just not by bars and liquor stores. We have a rich tradition of underage drinking here in the ol’ US of A.

My mom always told me if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.

I shall now say nothing about Philadelphia.

I’m not at all sure about these chrome thingies just here. Probably doesn’t stop the car being worth millions of course because it’s a Ferrari.
