Japanese
Certain engineering elements were inspired by something French and cheap
28hp and less than 1L
FR drivetrain layout

Fulfills 1/2 a criteria
Nevertheless, you are on the right track.
Edit: Your ninja edit makes my reply look stupid
For those who want to know the initial guess, it was 2CV.

Daihatsu Midget II?
Edit: Nah, that’s mid engine.

Huh. My other guess was an Escargot, but that’s front wheel drive and takes hints from French
styling
, not engineering.

BAM!!!
I was thinking of the air-cooled 2cyl boxer part. Did not know about the suspension.

You’re probably right ... I just remembered something about the car being related, not exactly what.

Do you have any images of this suspension? I didn’t know anyone but Citroen used it.

Ah, damnit, I was google searchin'

Publica was double wishbones up front and semi-elliptical leafs in the rear. No idea on the 2CV.

Yeah, that part was a guess. I just remembered the Publica and the 2CV being similar ... somehow. “Suspension” was probably just wishful thinking ;)

The 2CV was... extremely odd.

Toyota Sports 800. Used the same engine as the Publica, but is much more famous (and cute)

I do believe the YotaHachi uses a bored out version of the Publica, it actually made more power.

We know how inaccurate Wikipedia is, but it says, “utilizing the 21 kW (28 hp) power train of the Toyota Publica 700...”
I’d have to check my books at home to verify, though.

I could have swore the Petrolicious video on them pointed out that it was a bigger engine, plus 800 stands for 800cc while the Publica 700 was 700cc...

Good point on the naming. The Finnish Wikipedia article says 790cc and 45 hp.
