I didn’t realize you could pick up a decent Boxster with the 2.5 in the 6/7k range. 200hp and mid engined magic with a Porsche badge? I’d say this is a total steal.

That they are. Insurance and repair costs are the only reasons to get an NB Miata over one. Granted those are huge reasons for a limited budget sports car, but still.

“girl” Porsche or not, they ride beautifully and have a lot of nice little features. Just don’t put anything melty in the back trunk, anything larger than a briefcase or torso in the frunk, and never let the battery die, ever.

The higher the mileage the less you have to worry about IMS failure. Also the 2.5 has like a 0.2% failure rate

THEY CAN’T SEE MY LICENSE PLATE BECAUSE SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN

I was just referring to the general failures that will befall a nearly 20 year old car. Namely, all of them.

I’m secure enough with my masculinity to drive a “feminine” car. Also in white you could put some beautiful Martini strips on the car

Well, that is news. Can you get a Cayman for $6/7K yet?

Ehh at least it doesn't have the timing belt problems of a 944 or the complexity of a 928

By the time I have enough money to spend on something less practical, I’m hoping there are still a few clean, late MR2’s available or something newer from Honda, Porsche (bring back the 914 with the engine from the Golf R), or maybe even Scion...
Otherwise I’ll have to save my pennies for a kit car (RS200, Stratos, etc.)

Sure just put a hardtop on your Boxster. I think they are pretty cheap to buy or some came with the hardtop.

An S2000 would be awesome but those are not as cheap

Now I want a Boxster rally car. -_-

I was thinking strictly mid-engine, like the S660 but for the US. I don’t really have an interest/trust in fiat if they brought something back. I don’t think I’d go for a new Fiero if they ever brought back pontiac. But there could be hope for Porsche to move down market (or VW to move up), a brand like Scion to make something seriously interesting, or Honda to get weird again (heck I’d take a MR version of a CR-Z possibly with Targa/T-tops...)

You also need to budget for an exhaust that doesn't look like an anus. Just sayin....
![]() 07/28/2015 at 10:41 |

those headlights ruin an otherwise beautiful car
![]() 07/28/2015 at 10:50 |

The cheap mid engine department is seriously lacking. Honda would be crazy not to bring their small fun car stateside

Easy fix. Although I personally don't mind the exhaust

They are unfortunate but I don't think they are the worst thing on the planet either

I drove my wife’s 05 New Beetle Cabriolet for two years. I’m sure I’d be fine if I fit in one.
![]() 07/28/2015 at 11:05 |

I fit in one, and I’m ~230# and just shy of 6’2. The friend whose mom owned the one I’ve been in was closer to 250/6’3 and did okay.

How about a joint venture VW/Porsche affordable mid-engine sports car? They could call it the 914...

I direct you to my original comment...

Is the issue the battery replacement or issues that arise as a result of a dead battery?
![]() 07/28/2015 at 12:06 |
|
The latter. You can’t open the frunk to charge the battery if it goes absolutely stone dead without doing things like reaching up into the wheelwell to pull the frunk cable, and with the top up you also run into issues with the windows not auto-retracting when you open the doors.
![]() 07/28/2015 at 12:34 |
|
Jeez. That is a nightmare. I think that is probably the worst scenario I’ve heard of and I thought cars w/ keyless were bad.
![]() 07/28/2015 at 12:43 |
|
I only know because I’ve seen it happen. I think one fix/improvement is a charging lug to add to the fuse box or some such - that way you can jump and/or recharge the battery without having to get the frunk open. One would suggest reaching for the positive lead at the starter, I’m sure, but it’s not really reachable with the car on the ground.

According to cars dot Com the cheapest running and driving example in the US is about 18k. There are cheaper ones but they look to have severe crash damage

It’s cuz the milestone service costs are stupid.

Do you know from experience
![]() 07/28/2015 at 19:06 |

Prices have been roughly this low for a while. I was in the market for one. Looked up the cost for the 30k and 60k services. Was 2k to 4k.

I completely agree. I haven’t driven one yet, but I’m willing to bet they handle like they are on rails. I’d rather the Cayman though.
![]() 07/28/2015 at 20:39 |

Ouch. I’ve been reading to buy higher miles because that negates the possibility of an IMS failure

For your consideration the Porsche Boxster Hardtop

Tempting.... but I prefer the rigidity of a coupe.

It looks better than the hardtop

Indeed.
