I posted that my brother was hit by a drunk driver whilst driving in my mom’s 1985 W123 turbodiesel earlier this morning. We went to see the car a few hours ago.
It looks so depressing.
The doors are basically fused together.
The rear is still in perfect condition.
The engine was still running perfectly immediately after the crash.
The passenger seat is an example of why you wear your seatbelt. The person in the rear seat wasn’t and smashed the passenger seat full force. Fortunately, she walked away relatively unscathed.
The steering wheel isn’t pointing straight anymore and the glovebox was actually forced out of shape.
It still had at least 750,000 miles in it... Also, the clock is still keeping perfect time.
The transmission tunnel is destroyed and the rear view mirror fell off.

Shit man, I’m sorry to hear that. How’s your brother holding up?

Yikes. Glad everyone is OK.

Awwh :( Fucking drunk drivers man.
This makes me sad.

That is a damn shame. Glad to hear that everyone made it out pretty much ok. What kind of car was the drunk idiot driving?

Oh no! That’s terrible! If he was that drunk, why did you give him the keys to the 123?

Pretty well. The ER thinks he may have a broken wrist, but they said that the x-rays were inconclusive.

Oh you. (Edited)

Had to be huge to do that kind of damage to a 123.

Shit, hope your brother is doing alright!
Looks like a really clean car also, he should have had the person in the rear seat buckle up though.
Think you’ll be getting another one?

Oh man, did they catch the drunk? It break my heart to see a well loved car looking like that. I’m glad no one was hurt

A 2011 Ford sedan of some sort. The drunk idiot actually 3 people with him in the car, as well.

Tell your brother to lawyer up. Sounds like he has a good case against this negligent idiot.

Oh yeah. He wasn’t going anywhere fast. He failed the sobriety test and they took him down to the city jail to do a blood test.

The problem is that the insurance company will just see a miled out old car and give this guy pennies for his perfectly preserved classic. Sadly, this car is worth much more than its book value.

Seems like my mom wants to get something less project-y.

Oh yeah, we already plan on fighting them if they go that route. Basically, the way our insurance company put it was - if you aren’t happy with what the other insurance company will give you, we’ll get an amount you’re happy with. Hopefully something as simple as the NADA value and the Hagerty valuation will swing it in our favour.

I'm sorry man....accidents are awful and are truly painful..

The car did its job. It gave a noble sacrifice to save everyone inside it.

I feel bad about the Swiss flag/big plus joke last night in that Citroen Cactus post.

Haha, I didn’t take offense to it!

That’s awful. Glad the injuries weren’t worse, and that the car did its ultimate job. If you’re going to drive an older car, that’s about as safe as it gets.

I know, I was in a similar one. I was in the Miata.

As a former W123 owner and a big fan of the estate version, this seriously makes me want to punch puppies.

Save the Zebrano Wood! That stuff is expensive on Ebay. (at least for an r107)
...on another note... That is all pretty shitty to have happen.

Damn dude, I hope youre all okay, mentally and physically. I didnt drive for almost 5 weeks on my own after I had my accident.
Best of luck for a favorable turnout for you guys. Any chance at getting the car for at least a part-out to help someone elses project? Plenty of good parts in there still.

The insurance company is probably going to send the car to auction. Unfortunately, we don’t really have anywhere to store the remains.

Wow. How fast was the other guy going to do that much damage. My best wishes for your brother and other occupants of the merc . :(

He was actually making an illegal left turn on a red light on a 4 lane road, so probably about 35-40mph and my brother would have been going about 45-50mph (the speed limit is 45) So it was a pretty hard hit.

Damn...

That thing is absolutely beautiful. It’s a damn shame.
I guess on the positive side it did live a long full healthy life as a vehicle before cruel fate reared it’s head.

Ridiculous. There’s no good reason for doing this.

Glad your brother is okay (hope he doesn’t agree to anything saying he’s alright for awhile yet), but sorry to hear about the formerly gorgeous 123. I’ve about had my limit with the slack given to drunk driving in the US (I have a post a few weeks ago, related).

I really hope he pays for damages, but reality, man. This makes me cry on the inside and out.

We’re probably going to get a good pay out. The guy is being tried for at least one felony OWI with injury. So they don’t have much negotiating room.
What makes me really sad is that my mom wants to replace it with a Camry or Corolla.

This saddens me. Glad everyone escaped unharmed. Hope the car gets parted out instead of going to waste.

... You know, I think I stopped being surprised and mor- well, I am mortified (a bit) but not exactly surprised she wanted something on those lines.
