Hello Opponauts! I’m still out on this work trip enjoying the California Law Enforcement agencies hospitality. Anyway I’ve been doing some car searching as I plan on picking up a new daily when I get home.

This popped up during a search yesterday.

Yes, that’s right. Black, diesel, 6-speed, wagon.

I love me some wagon, and manual, and I’ve been curious about the TDi VWs for some time (A couple friends have had TDi Jettas with great mileage).

Now, He’s waaaaaayyyyyy over KBB on it, and I’d allow for a little over due to the BSM delete (from what I read it’s not cheap, but maybe I misread) and the manual swap. But almost $5k over KBB retail?

If I were to talk this guy down to a reasonable number (suggestions appreciated), what are the cons of the Passat TDi Wagons? Maintenance costs? (I consider myself a decent wrench but have no experience with diesels.) Insurance costs?

Thanks guys & gals!

$11k for a ten year old Passat? CP.

Exactly, but the call of the diesel manual wagon is intriguing. No way I’d pay asking for it, and I’m not afraid to walk away if he’s firm.

I’d walk away if he doesn’t cut it in half at least.

At the right price, I would buy that in a heartbeat, it even has the wheels I dream of. But this is basically a project car. And asking that much is crazy. I mean, unless the guy is a VW engineer, or this was done by a shop that actually does these all the time... I would be very wary at any price. As is, that’s a lot of money for someone else’s completely customized car.

Also, the guy parked on the lines in his pictures. I mean, can you really trust him?

You’re right about the crackpipe, but neat car. The Pumpe Duse TDIs are a pretty good engine, but I’ve seen a few eat injectors, which are cam-driven under the (plastic, leaky) valve cover so it’s ugly when they go. Oil leaks are common, and at this age pretty much all the rubber induction pipes will need to be replaced. The engine mounts should be considered a regular maintenance item. The multilink front suspensions are made of glass, and while they ride and handle well when fresh, they do not take well to imperfect roads and tend to destroy front tires. I presume if the swap was done with an imported “kit” as stated that it’s a correct diesel ‘box, because if it’s a gas transaxle the gearing will be much too short for the diesel’s powerband.
