To be fair, everyone turns left into that lot because there is absolutely no reason not to allow it and the alternative means waiting up to 10 minutes longer for traffic to clear after turning left at the light onto a much busier road. Still... the rest of us at least use the entrance, not the exit. And we don’t get caught by Street View like this genius.

What should have happened is that when they paved that entrance, they did not put that asinine little concrete island to prevent people from making a left into the lot at that point, or added a left turn lane to the street to allow people to do so without blocking traffic if it is that busy.

This concrete block right here - this is the problem, and it’s directly related to trying to control traffic in an unnatural way. “Yes, there’s two-way traffic on this lane, but you can only turn in from one direction, because we said so.” Yeah, uh, good luck with that. Try to make people do unnatural things, and don’t be surprised when other unnatural things crop up as second order effects.

Last weekend I was sitting in the worst traffic imaginable. A guy in a van just like that tried cutting thru a parking lot to gain a few places in line. People were not letting him in at all

The heck of it is, they clearly had the free space to go to three lanes’ width right there, but chose to protect the right turn
from
the Exxon and give space to clear the intersection rather than allow lefts - which don’t have any clear drawbacks to taking place in the picture, and otherwise means people taking two lefts against traffic to get into the Exxon if they’re unlucky enough to be on the side road. Either left turns into the Exxon are too uncommon to need special accommodation, in which case just *let them turn left*, or they’re common enough to impede traffic, so... shift the burden of their stalling traffic to two other places - the main road *and* at the light? No part of this makes any sense. None.

At least go around to the other side of the island, so you are only breaking the ‘no left turn’ setup and not scaring the shit out of somebody leaving!
We have a gas station by us on a very busy two lane street with very high commuter traffic amounts. They have a “No left turn from 6-9AM and 4-6 PM” sign at their exit but every time I drive by (during those hours) there is someone trying to make a left and causing a traffic clusterfuck. There’s a reason they have the no left turn signs you jerks!
There is no island setup the way these guys have it though. That’s a pretty clear indication that you aren’t supposed to go that way.

But it should be how that works.

Those little concrete islands don’t do shit. If they’re going to make one, at least make it taller and actually put grass in the center or something. Otherwise people will continue doing that kind of stuff.
A few months back I was waiting at a light next to a shopping plaza that had one of these little concrete things. Some airhead was coming out of this parking lot in an Altima and
almost
high-pointed on it. She was completely oblivious to it too. And these people share the road with you and I.

To be fair, left turns OUT of the Exxon shouldn’t be allowed, since that only brings you to the same main road you could access directly from the other exit... which also means nobody ever turns right INTO this entrance here, anyway, considering they would have had to come from the main road... which already has an entrance. It just makes no sense. I remember when it first opened and they had free drinks with a fill-up as a promotion. Everyone was coming from the same direction as this van, and it was just a clusterfuck of some people deciding to turn left anyway, some people going the long way around, a few people driving up through the exit, and quite a few just sitting in the middle of the road unable to comprehend how to do anything. You’d think they would have learned something from that, but it’s been like 7 or 8 years and nothing has changed.

I once watched someone drive straight over one and then turn right anyway. I just don’t even try to understand some people.

A few years back I was driving HGV’s (semi trucks). There was some roadwork up ahead so two lanes became one and the speed limit was reduced from 90 to 70 (kph). I’m in the right lane, and so is everyone else since in a few hundred yards the road narrows.. I then get a call on the walkie from my coworker driving the HGV behind me “Hey mate, some dude is coming up FAST AS FUCK in the left lane, why don’t you pull out and drive in the left lane and I’ll let you in when the lanes merge?” So I did... The guy in the bright yellow Ferrari wasn’t to happy about it, but hey.. YOU DO NOT FUCKING do 120 in a 70 zone when the lanes are about to merge, PERIOD.
