I organized a dinner tonight for a bunch of my friends and some work people. Just a loose bunch of us young professional types. THe place I was planning on us going to, every time I called ahead previously said “Call us close to the day” and finally “We don’t do reservations but call us the day of and we’ll prepare”. It’s a group of eh.....15-20. Well today’s the day aaaaaaand they can’t be bothered. So I went to another place who instantly welcomed us and apologized that they really only do reservations for private rooms but made a note to expect us and said if I came down half an hour early they’d push tables and have a spot for us. Cool. Perfect, right?

NOPE!

All I have heard is about how this place is more expensive and is too much for their budget and everything like that. Which is funny because their food types are very similar and are *the same EXACT prices*. But this new place? It looks like a MUCH more expensive place than it is. 12-15$ gets you a pizza to share between 2 people. 12-18 (depending on add-ons) gets you like a trough of mac and cheese to share. Burgers and sandwiches are 8-12$.......It just looks like a badass place! So people are canceling because they just assume the *slightly* dingier/less modern place is cheaper.........I hate people.

For comparison purposes, here’s the new place:

I just don’t understand why so many places don’t do reservations. When you’re dining with a group of 10+ people, the wait is just massive when there is no reservations.

This! Every time my in-laws want to go out for a family dinner we end up at a buffet just because it's the only type of place we can go without an interminable wait due to the size of the group (10-12 people).

Still better than that greek restaurant part of my clan always goes to after some annual event about mourning dead people. Last year we went there we had to wait over two hours until we finally got our food. Even people who came after us got their food earlier. You’d think that after reserving half the restaurant on the same day each year for almost twenty they would prepare for us.

The part of town I am in is very well known all around so recently, a lot of them took dives in service and quality because they could. They don’t care. And they have the money to not need to care.

Places like that don’t take reservations because oftentimes the people don’t show up and they don’t want to hold a table when they could seat people who are already waiting. The restaurant isn’t really worried about upsetting your party because there are plenty of paying customers right behind you who will take the seats.

Not taking reservations typically increases your drink sales (which have a high profit margin) because people will usually wait at the bar for 20-30 min while a table gets ready.
