Kinja'd!!!

So my car sat on jack stands for 2.5 months. and then when I drove it home it was making this horrible knocking, clunking noise, and bucking when coming to a stop, and shaking so bad above 45+ that I limped it home at 35-40 with the hazards on. I drove a total for 30 miles, constantly trying to diagnose the problem. A few solutions popped up ranging from, the tires splitting apart (a bad tie rod end caused some nasty tire wear before I bought it.) to as scary as the transfer case being very unhappy with it’s life.

Three days after I drove it home from my father in law’s garage I realized what had happened.

Both my buddy and I forgot to tighten the lug nuts on the front left wheel. Tightened the lug nuts, and the shaking is completely gone. There is still some vibration above 55, but I’m blaming that on the crap tires, and needing an alignment after I replaced the tie rod end.

Also I did go play around in a empty big dirt lot. I’ve never had anything but a FWD car. I really had no idea what I was missing. AWD is awesome, my next car will need to be RWD.

And here is a picture of the car my Galant VR-4 dreams about being.

keep an eye out on the forums. Just found this a minute ago

This green color for the 92’s is the color I’ll paint mine if I ever get around to a full restoration.

yeah I like that color it would be my first choice followed by white. have you seen the super clean one on toms turbo garage. The thing is perfect!

How hard are they to maintain? Are they expensive to repair?

I forgot to torque the lug nuts on the passenger side rear wheel of my mom’s Jeep after doing the brakes one night. “Finished” the job and went to get gas. Terrible rattling coming from the back and it scared the hell out of my brother and me. Limped home and the lugs were loose as shit. I’m always super cautious about it now haha

some of the parts are shared with the Eclipse and Talon, so not everything is crazy expensive. but to give you an idea, I spent 1500 on mine with 155,000 miles on it. right now I at least 3500 in it, and it still needs a few things...

The engine bay isn’t any fun as it’s very cramped. But it is tons of fun. If your looking for something to work on yourself that will be a bit of a challenge than it’s an awesome choice.

Oh that’s sexy. I wan’t those bumpers, and those decals on the rear doors. haha

Those wheels are pretty hot too, but at this point I’m thinking I’ll be doing a 5 lug swap before I invest in nice wheels.

Reminds me of when I had the ‘66 Mustang. Putting in a rebuilt 289. Installing the distributor and I put it in off 180 deg. Pulled up on it to turn it and.....the oil pump shaft dropped into the pan. Had to drop the pan to recover it and reset it. Added an extra day I did not have to that project.

Been there, done that. It is a nice relief after all the inventory of failure is eliminated.
Oh.

You got pretty lucky. We took my Porsche for a test drive after bleeding the brakes without torquing the lugs on the left rear tire. We came out of the turn and suddenly the rear dropped because only one lug was still holding on. Then we had to run a jack down the road to jack it up on the side of the road and reattach.

Back in high school, my shop teacher had signs all over that said “ALWAYS TORQUE YOUR NUTS”. To this day (knock on wood), I’ve not (yet?) failed to do that.

My dad did this once. Realized what the problem was when both rear tires passed him up.

I need to get better at making check lists for “when the project leaves the garage. I made one for this car as the work done to it was spread out over so much time, but I guess I forgot to add “torque lug nuts”

One thing I got in the habit of doing before I had a decent torque wrench was using torque sticks every time I put a nut back on the wheel. Harbor Freight has a set that go up to heavy-duty truck specs for not too much, certainly cheaper than a decent (and accurate) torque wrench.
