I’m itching for a motorcycle more than you could ever imagine. I’d like to find one for under $1,500. This looks extremely tempting. My daily commute is around 25 miles which isn’t much, but when I start tech school in August, the commute will be around 50+ miles. A bike would be great for fuel savings and a bit of fun.

Grab it.

From the pics, it looks great for an ‘87. And if this is your first bike, I think you’d do well with with A) a dual sport and B) a Honda.

I’m a huge fan of dual sports and think this could be a great first bike. I’ve gotta to see if I can wrangle the cash to snag it.

I’m paying for school in the fall so if I do by a bike, it’s gotta be cheap. Wrenching on it isn’t a problem and it wouldn’t be a daily so if it breaks down, not a big deal haha

Cool bike, but not exactly geared for fuel economy.

Youve read the pieces i wrote. I dont oike the age of it...but it looks relatively well maintained and cared for.

Just remember to set aside a good chunk of.change for the right gear.

Careful, this has the RFVC motor if I am not mistaken. Honda tried to do 4 valves per cylinder and dual carbs with a single cam to make more power. It did make more power but it had reliability issues.

A guy I know who has a ton of experience with old off-road Hondas absolutely hates the RFVC motor and stays away from it like its the plague. He is kind of opinionated though but I have always trusted his judgement. The RFVC was in the XR lineup from 84 to 85 and then was dropped in favor of the old 2 valve, single carb motor. They kept it in the XL lineup until 87 though.

I had an 83 XR200R with the single carb motor and a six speed and at most I could do a little over 50mph. The XL might be geared different so maybe it would be better for road use. Doubt it will ever do highway though. If your commute is all back roads though, you should be fine. Just make sure that RFVC motor is well taken care of!
