Here we have a good little documentary about the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in action in 1960. Their way of doing things are interesting, but similar to most other navies. Keep an ear out for the senior office to tell one of his men to “quit bitching and get back to your hole.”

That was enjoyable. I like seeing all those ship fittings, and just how overbuilt everything is. All that brass. Not mentioned in the video is that the launch bridle just splashes into the sea and is lost. The US used a bridle launch with the Phantom, and the Super Etendard still uses one. I can’t imagine how many of those things they had to bring on a deployment, or how many of them are on the ocean floor. Also, it looks like some of those guys are basically wearing sneakers. I think I’d want some steel toes out there.

“quit bitching and get back to your hole.”

It’s nice to see that not much has changed in the Royal Navy in 200 years.
