Wow. You know them?

hopefully they waste their lives in jail.

A small world I don’t know them but we are pretty much neighbors

That’s just fucked up. I really hope they don’t let these two off with an insanity plea.

I’m having trouble getting my head around this. As a parent, I have to wonder just how bad things were for the kids to go off the deep end like that, or what external influences they succumbed to.

No-one gets ‘let off’ with an insanity plea.
[ETA: Except Ernest Saunders... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Sa… ]

It’s hard to agree because they’re so young, but holy crap.... If they are able to be rehabilitated, there is no way they’ll be able to forgive themselves for this. It almost seems better for them if they just waste away without ever realizing they were wrong.
Of course, the younger one could have strongly been influenced by his brother, and if that’s the case he at least deserves a chance to redeem himself. But still.... I’m at a loss for words.

I was never really sure how an insanity plea works, from my understanding it meant the accused didn’t understand what they were doing when they were committing a crime. I think these brothers clearly understood what they were doing.

Small world indeed. I got married in Broken Arrow.

The legal definition of insanity is a bit odd:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%27Naght…
The way you put it is roughly right - the accused has to have not understood that what they were doing was wrong, or not known what they were doing at all. I don’t see any evidence for that one way or another in this case, at this stage. For all we know, the two boys might have been suffering from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capgras_d… or some such similar condition.
The point I was making, though, is about what happens afterwards. No-one’s ‘let off’ just because they’re found not guilty by reason of insanity. They’ll be locked away in a hospital of some kind rather than a prison, treated for their illness, and only ever released if they’re not a danger to others. Ill people don’t deserve to be punished for being ill, but that doesn’t mean a danger to the public can be allowed to run around free.

It's just awful. I can't comprehend it. Maybe the older brother was an undiagnosed psychopath or something and convinced the younger brother to go along with him or something. Terrible situation.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like you would have to be crazy to kill someone. The only exception to this being if they were trying to cause harm to you.

Oh I understand now, thank you! That Capgras Delusion sounds pretty strange.

Yeah, there’s all kinds of really weird psychological/neurological conditions that exist. I don’t know why the Capgras one in particular came to mind here.
There’s an excellent (non-fiction but very interesting and easy to read) book about some odd conditions like that called The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat:

The Capgras does make sense though in this case. They believed everyone was an impostor, their twisted state told them to eliminate the impostors? It fits.

It doesn’t conflict with what we know - but there are any number of other delusions which might have led to the same outcome. Or quite possibly - probably? - no delusion at all.

You mentioned you lived near Tulsa on Lehto’s post, so I started looking through your posts. Sorry to bring up old (bad) shit by commenting on this one, but I live less than 2 miles from you (just north of the sports complex, west of Aspen).

Wow. You are close, never seen someone who lives near Tulsa on oppo.

There’s one other guy that’s a student at TU. Luke, I think?
Are you involved with the Caffeine and Gasoline group or active on the local car spotting Facebook pages?

Nope. If you have seen my previous posts I don’t even drive.

C&G is fun - you don't need to drive to show up and check out incredible cars. The Tulsa car spotting pages are worth following, too. Lots of great cars in the area.
