Pretty straightforward question, what weird quirks does your car have?
The M3 has a couple that I can think of off the top of my head.
( Not an E36 cluster but you get the point )
First, I have a failing wheel speed sensor somewhere on the car, so occasionally my ABS and ASC lights come on. To fix it you have to shuffle the gearbox from park to drive to reverse and back to park, then turn the car off and back on. 99% of the time that shuts the lights off.
Another would be my glovebox door. Those that have owned an E36 know the glovebox design is a bad one and likes to not work. For mine to latch you have to take the door and hold it in the closed position then take the key and lock the glovebox. When you unlock it it holds.
I’m not even gonna go into the Safari’s quirks. There’s so many. I guess a couple quick ones would be you have to press the window switch forward and down to roll down the passenger side window and if you put the lever for temp to max cool a hissing noise comes form behind the HVAC controls.

My car has a rear mounted fuel filler that doesn't stay open unless you jam your gas cap in a slot. Also, power front windows only.

My TL makes a noise around 45mph. If I do 42, I can't hear it. If I do 47, it goes away.

My cars are both sports cars with less than two liters of displacement and 200 hp. I’m told that this is not enough and that they aren’t sports cars, but for some reason I keep beating people who say that they’re not at the track. Weird how that works...

My Miata’s 6-speed transmission doesn’t like to engage reverse sometimes. Put it back in neutral, cycle the clutch pedal (seems like this step actually helps, but who knows?), then put it in reverse and it usually engages.

Brakes squeak while rolling at low speeds. Havent bothered to figure it out, but they are fairly new brakes (I didnt install them) and still work OK.
Although, I have a feeling it may be related to shitty brake pads and possibly worn out parking brake shoes. If I keep tension on the parking brake, the squeak goes away.
Meh.

I doubt the intermittent ABS light is from a failing ABS sensor... You should diag it properly with the right tool

On the Murano the biggest one is the rear hatch being stuck closed. Common problem, planning on spraying the latch mechanism down with pb blaster to loosen it all up this weekend.

Over the winter my TPMS light would come on randomly, but a sensor relearn fixed that.

Well when we plug in the fancy little under-hood scantools we bought it has a code for a speed sensor so that's what I'm sticking with.

besides my new bearing issue? Well it doesn’t go into OD until its warmed up a little and the tempature gauge is a joke, it goes up to the middle right away and stays there until its WAY too hot, then it rockets up. (well it used to, it doesn’t overheat anymore since I serviced the cooling system)

My motorcycle will occasionally die right after a cold start, but it never happens twice in a row.
The FR-S high pressure fuel pump “chips” loudly
The BMW has the same screwy LCD gauge, and no joke, the turn signal stalk became totally unresponsive for about 10 minutes yesterday.

My car has push button start (sometimes I don’t mind it and sometimes I hate it) and the key fob can be very finicky. I push the button and it says “damaged key” on the dash, but if I take the key and smack it back side down on the to gear stick it will work, 100% no problem.
Hitting on other things (knuckles, my head, passengers head, and such) have been less effective, but experiments are on going.

yeah, its not great. There is a hack to make in linear involving soldering a resistor into the path but thats a lot of work when I could (and will) just install a scangauge.

Yeah, that’s every water temperature gauge. They have a dead-spot to prevent consumers from freaking out because it’s moving around all the time, so they don’t show the car as hot until it’s waaaaaay hot. Do you have OBD? You can always monitor it that way, but if not, just installing a real gauge will work. They’re cheap.

Coming out of “S” shift mode back into normal, uh, “D” shift mode, the E46 transmission will hold the last gear I’m in until I push it back into S and then pull back again into D. If I nail it in S, get to about 4k in 3rd gear and shift back over to D, it’ll hang at 4k rpm until I flick the stick back and forth one time. It happens often enough to be a nuisance, but not to do anything about it.

Hmm. Some of the Datsun’s quirks are by design, but most are just from it being old and breaking.
-The doors will only lock if they’re closed. This means it is actually impossible for me to lock my key in my car. It also means that if I have a passenger, they have to get out, shut their door, and then wait for me to reach across and lock it for them. It doesn’t reward them for being considerate and trying to lock it themselves before they get out.
-Lap belts. They scare the shit out of every young person that gets into my car.
-The steering wheel is located incorrectly on the column, which is actually really nice because it means one of its spokes falls right onto my left hand when I have my arm on the arm rest. On the other side, it always looks like I’m turning left.
-To turn the ignition, the key needs to be inserted fully, then backed out a specific amount at a specific angle before it will turn.
-To start the car, use liberal amount of choke (yes, there is a choke lever in the car that must be adjusted by hand). Reduce choke as engine warms up. Don’t turn the car off with the choke pulled. Hot starts don’t need choke.
-If I fill the gas tank too full, fuel will spill out past the cap on a sharp right turn.
-The filler neck is not quite the right shape to fit most modern gas spouts, so I usually have to hold the hose while filling up.
-At night, the oil pressure/gas gauge usually doesn’t light up until you give the dashboard above it precisely one firm smack. Has worked like this for 3 years.
-Interior door handles are very low, and hidden behind a person’s knees while they sit. Many unsuspecting passengers have become trapped.
-The rearview mirror’s night-dimmer-thing has an adorable pictograph sun on one side, and an adorable pictograph star on the other.

My truck has a very twitchy steering, if you’re not smooth with the wheel it likes to dart in the direction you’re steering. The hydraulic clutch leaks, but only when it’s below freezing. And the clutch engagement point is super high, but can’t be adjusted since it’s a hydraulic clutch

The M3 does something similar, but I think it’s designed to. If you press the pedal far enough and get past 4k and let off, if holds at 4k for about 5 seconds before it finally shifts. I’m guessing it’s so if you track it it doesn’t up shift out of the power band while you’re slowing for a corner or something.

Most manual transmissions have unsynchronised reverses since there’s only one reverse gear and you won’t be shifting to another. This can make it behave like an old crash box and necessitate double clutching.

Our Envoy has a very noisy secondary air-injection pump. I had it serviced a few years ago and it is fully functional and in fine shape, it just makes a ton of noise.
On a cold start it sounds like a jet spooling up. Here’s a video I took:

My 06 Rio makes a high pitch clicking sound when it is a quart low on oil between full oil changes. Does about 4200 miles after oil change and as it nears 5000 miles the fuel injector clicks become louder. After that it will burn a quart of oil every 1100 miles until I change the oil. So if I want to go 7500 miles between oil changes I would need to add 2.5 quarts of oil evenly after 4200 miles.
*Note I have averaged nearly 900 miles a week since April 2013, so I can butt and ear diagnosis most maintenance and now I’m afraid to retire it for something “decent.”

Reverse lockout on my 01’ Miata is a real pain sometimes. Much better with the new clutch and hydraulic system, but its just a characteristic of the design.
I like the lockout design better when you have to push the knob down or pull it up to get to reverse. Sure I have gotten used to it but sometimes I get stuck in limbo where I am not really in reverse nor 6th gear.

Using one of those ELM readers with Bluetooth output to Torque is great for that. Showing the exact temperature is much more useful than “middle”. I wish manufacturers would put the OBD ports somewhere that wasn’t in the way of driving though lol. I have seen worse (right under the steering wheel) but hitting my left knee is not exactly convenient.

Yeah that transmission just works that way. Ever get stuck in limbo where the reverse lights are on but it just whirs and doesn’t move anywhere? And its just because you didn’t go quite far enough to get it all the way into gear. Greatly improved and easier with my new clutch but its difficult to do if I am tired; requires lots of force sometimes.

My car had one of those newfangled things back in the 90s that was an onboard thing that showed how much fuel you were getting based on driving habits. I guess that early technology was a joke, as it’s pretty inaccurate, I’ve been driving pretty slowly for a couple minutes and it says I’m only getting 15 MPG, while sometimes I’ll floor it briefly and it says I'm still maintaining 20. I'm sure age has something to do with it, but it really can be a source of comedy sometimes.

I believe Volvo was the only one to ever do it...

Yep, that’s what happens when reverse doesn’t get engaged. I don’t like shoving it into reverse, so the double-clutch helps it slide into place.

On those old Datsun doors you can lock it from the inside, but you have to hold the handle up when you close it or it will unlock.

On my 02 WRX the instrument lights will not come on unless I tap on it... but only on the left half. I guess there are two bulbs back there.
On the Datsun... haha so many little gremlins. My favorite is that on extended drives the idle will float up and I have to get out and adjust it. I gain about 200 RPM an hour.

On my E30, every now and then when I turn the car on and start driving I get a weird ticking/creaking noise from just below the steering wheel - the ticking gets progressively quicker, becomes a constant note and then goes away. No clue what it is - sometimes I don’t hear it for a while, and then it does it randomly...it’s almost pleasant like running into an old acquaintance you didn’t really care about but was an interesting person - but one you know you’d continue to not making an effort to get to know.
Transmission output bearing rattles like on many E30s. So when stopped at a traffic light it’s either take the foot off the clutch and listen to the thing rattle like crazy (it’s not that loud - I just know it’s there so it bugs me constantly), or keep foot pressed in clutch the whole time....or sometimes if I’m just sly enough in releasing the clutch pedal it doesn’t rattle, and I think I’ve defeated the machine...and then it starts rattling. Little bitch.

had a 94 Bravada that had multiple. To get the tail gate open you would have to jam a screw driver down the spare tire gate to pop the latch so it could swing open. The dimmer switch went bad for the digital dash and defaulted to the dimmest setting. So you only turned on the headlights on until you absolutely had too.

My ‘97 Accord’s automatic made a vicious whirring sound in gear. The thing sounded like it was going to grenade when I got it ~80k miles and still sounded the same when my friend killed it at ~155k miles (incidentally, from a burst coolant hose caused it to overheat and blow the head gasket). We tried flushing and replacing the fluid a few times - which made it shift slightly smoother - but the sound didn’t change in pitch or intensity.
Every once in a while I notice a similar vintage Honda drive by with the same whirr and am reminded what an awesome, if noisy, car it was.

The oil pressure lights up as I turn the key (good), turns off after the car revs (good), oil lights back up again in 3 seconds, (wtf??? bad) and turns off again (good, phew). It won’t do that blinking once the car’s heated up.
Steam comes off the hood... during a heavy rain. Radiator fluid remains at the same level. Temperature gauges float freely, and can be actually seen going down as the radiator fan kicks in. Hood is dry after I park in garage, before the rest of the car. Spirited driving under 40mph?
When I bump into potholes, I can hear the ABS actuator moving, despite I never reached the brake pedal. No ESP on the Honda Civic ‘99 whatsoever. Honda technician says that it is impossible. I say that wheel changed speed abruptly as it dives into pothole, which is information enough for ABS. He laughs to my face (not really, but you can see the scorn). Nobody cares to explain what else tickles ABS, because it moves on really bumpy roads and potholes, as described.

My parents have a 2014 Subaru Forester CVT with an ignition switch that behaves strangely. The key always fits into the ignition, but sometimes the tumbler refuses to turn, so you have to play around with it for 1-2 minutes before you can start the car. (It’s especially annoying when you’re trying to avoid getting boxed in at the curbside departure dropoff at Sea-Tac Airport.) It doesn’t matter that the car is in park with the handbrake set and the driver’s foot on the brake: The tumbler won’t turn. I think it has something to do with the behavior (as yet unidentified) of the previous driver because I usually notice the problem after my dad has been driving. Maybe he shuts the car off before putting it in park and setting the handbrake. I dunno. I need to scrutinize his behavior more closely...

My car has a range calculator. When you fill up, it gives you how far you can go on the tank under the assumption you drive like the Stig. It then goes up, not down, as you drive (I’ve gotten it as high as 625 miles) When you next drive the car, it will finally go down to a lower number, but as you drive the number will once again start to climb. So let’s say I’ve filled the tank most of the way. If I pull out of the gas station and the range says 400 miles, by the time I get where I’m going, it will say 465 miles. Next time I start the car it will say 380 miles, but by the time I get where I’m going, it will say 415 miles. This keeps going until I hit range 50 miles. If I drive the car with the range under 50 miles, it falls as a normal car would. If the range gets below 25 miles, when you shut the car off, the range will say zero when you turn it back on. This is how I ran out of gas in the middle of the street leaving school.

when I turn my WRX off there is a soft sort of buzzing noise for 2-3s coming from maybe under the drivers side dash board, no idea what it is but it always does it and it always has. Maybe I’ll ask the dealer when I get my first oil change

2003 Mazda6 V6 S: from the factory the seat heater switches are on the front of the center glove box, which is a bit odd, but not likely to be hit accidentally or have drinks spilled on them like they were in my Volvo.
As for age-related quirks, the HVAC/radio display only works when it wants to, but excepting the clock, most of it is fairly redundant since I have all my radio presets saved and don’t mess with the HVAC much.

The gap between the passenger seat and the door is an absolutely perfect fit for fast food-style drink cups.
The power steering is hydraulic, but the pump is driven by an electric motor, rather than a belt from the engine.
The upholstery is covered in endearingly daft leaf patterns.
It has remote central locking, but manual windows, no sunroof and no ABS.
The pedals are so close together that, even with my slightly below average shoe size, I have to wear Converse, or something similarly narrow, lest I be constantly braking and accelerating at the same time.
The ash tray is so well hidden that I’d owned the car for about three months before I realised it had one.

I think that’s about it, honestly. It’s a surprisingly quirk-lite car.

Mine tends to do the opposite, I lose about a hundred RPM on any really long or really hard drive. I figured it just took that long for the carbs to get heat soaked, and then to start to run a bit too rich.

The auto transmission in my Yukon shifts like a manual transmission but only when going from 1st to 2nd gear. Nothing wrong with the transmission, just likes to shift like that.

Heh, my cars are full of quirks. Where to start?
Volvo 850R:
The air conditioning switch lights up to tell you that the AC is off, rather than on. This is apparently normal.
The oil thermostat ‘flutters’ when the oil is cold, making a disconcerting (but very futuristic) whining noise as you take off.
The little plastic stops on the rear seat belts are missing, so if you fold the back seat down, the belts may over-retract and make it impossible to put the seat back up without disassembling it.
VW Scirocco:
The interior door lock knobs are both missing, and there’s no central locking, so the only way to lock/unlock it is to go around the car with the key. No reaching across to unlock the passenger door, even.
When starting from cold, the first few attempts to start will cause it to only run for a couple of seconds, and then once it does start running, you have to let it idle for a couple of minutes, otherwise it’ll die as soon as you touch the throttle.
When starting from hot, it will start on any number of cylinders that isn’t four, and slowly the rest will come in as it works the fuel vapour out of the injector lines.
While the original R12 AC system still works, fan speed 1 doesn’t work at all and 4 only works sometimes. Also, the direction control lever will sometimes come unhooked.
MGA... Now we’re talking:
No exterior door handles - to open the door, you reach inside and pull a cord inside the door pocket. The cord on the driver’s side is missing, so you have to reach inside the door and pull on the latch lever directly
The controls on the dash all look identical, are labelled with a single letter each. Guess what P, L, C, W, S and F do. Not to mention the fact that there are a couple that aren’t labelled at all.
The choke is manual, and starting from cold takes a certain amount of finesse.
First gear is straight-cut and unsynchronised, like reverse is on most manual gearboxes. Trying to engage it from anything but a dead stop requires a level of double-declutching mastery that I have not yet attained.
Brakes are unassisted drums all round. There’s no shortage of stopping power, but it definitely takes more pedal effort than modern ones.
The turn signals are controlled by a knob on the dashboard, and the self-cancelling operates on a timer, rather than steering wheel position: turn the knob in the direction you want to signal, and it’ll stay on for 10 or so seconds. Any longer, and you need to hold it there.

I have a ‘77 with the fuel injection. There’s an idle spring that controls how much the throttle stays open, and I think that once everything gets really hot in there it moves around. I welded a wing nut on top of it so I didn’t need to carry around a screwdriver.
