I saw one of these on the road today, and it really piqued my interest. The one I saw had a “for sale” sign on it, but the guy was RIPPING the car around. Getting in his last kicks, I presume. We exchanged a thumbs-up as I turned into a gas station and he tore ass around the corner. I gotta admit, I like that air-cooled clatter and rattle.

Anyone around here own a 914? I’m probably always going to own a Japanese car, but weird cars like the 914 interest me. It’s pretty much a beetle engine back there right? The only problem is that they rust to pieces I assume.

914s are indeed very cool if you can find one without body rot, or are handy with a welder. I’ve never owned one but I knew a guy who had owned one. He was always saying that he really wanted to get another one but never did while I knew him. To give you a reference he also owned an S2000 and a couple of Miatas over the years. The hotrod 914, the 914-6, is already getting kind of pricey as more people appreciate them.

These things are killer on track once they’re set up correctly. Super lightweight, simple, mid engined... Pretty much a perfect recipe in my opinion.

Back in high school I had a friend with a 914. He always made a big deal out of having his own Porsche, the rest of us would smile and nod and tell him that we really liked his VW Ghia.

I’ve got a Miata now and an S2000 will probably be my next daily driver, so this guy sounds like he’s got good taste. I agree- I’ve already given up on a 914-6 being obtainable.

I bought one 19 years ago (when I could have bought two, one non-runner, for half the price, but the price on mine was less than an average Miata), a 74 2.0 “creamcicle.”

Still have it... 1500 miles from home. Still want to drive it, still don’t have a garage for it. Not a fast car, but a very, very fun car, except when it vapor locks on a hot day, leaving you stuck in a busy intersection.

He loved the go-kart feeling of the 914. He was definitely another roadster man, though he preferred 911 Targas to Cabriolets. I think the reason he never got another 914 was that he wasn’t particularly mechanically inclined and to keep an old car like a 914 as a DD (and he insisted his roadsters be able to be daily driven) while not doing the work yourself would be very expensive.

I’ve heard the 914 called the best Porsche that VW ever made. Yes, the 4-cyl is basically a Beetly engine, but OMG the handling. Even half rusted out, my friend’s would run circles around my Miata.

A friend of mine has one of these that’s been in various states of repair since long before I met him.

I’m really hoping I’ll get to drive it some day.

I really like the 914, it’s on my list of cars-to-eventually-own.

A) you get to go WOT because <100hp and still stay below the speed limit

B) mid-engine

C) light

D)Amazing steering/handling

cons

<100 hp

shifter described as box of rocks (that linkage is quite long~ midengine)

I came across one in the junkyard last weekend. Looked like somebody had taken the outer sills off only to find that there was pretty much nothing left behind them, and gave up on it. It was still pretty complete, otherwise. They’re lovely-looking cars, and they definitely have all the ingredients to make them a whole lot of fun. I’d love to try one out one day.
