Not bad for something with bodywork issues. First time I’ve properly cleaned it in... 4 months?

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Of course, all pictures were on the good side with all the trim still in tact and no rust on the rear fender... No one needs to know, shhhh.

My hands are absolutely trashed from the cleaners and stuff though.

And now it will rain for three weeks straight, ruining any sort of cleanliness there was. The front wheels will probably be caked in brake dust by Saturday.

They look great but those spokes are a bitch to clean well. Especially for Mr. Fatfingers (aka Me)

I could tell around the edges. Not saying you don’t do good work, I just realize how difficult that stuff is. Trust me, I know, I worked at a BMW dealership’s detail department for one summer. I might recommend one of these and a weedkiller sprayer of simple green.

It really bugs me that the roundel is embossed on the steering wheel instead of being an actual badge. It’s just not befitting of a premium automaker.

Other than that it’s a great looking car.

Except for those headlights.

That's one of the main reasons I want to change the wheel out for the better 3 spoke design, it has a legitimate logo. Well, and it just looks better and a little less early airbag wheel.

Heeeelllll nope. Just used a microfiber glove thing that was flexible enough to get through the spokes.

That car is DIEING for a manual swap.

Don’t buy a next one, just do this one. A trans and an ECU will be cheaper than a car. Even if you paid a shop for labor.

What do you think I’ll be doing to the HEMIWagon in a year or so?

This one has a loooot more stuff it needs before a manual swap, sadly. (Hello, $5k in paint and bodywork needed before the whole thing turns to a rusted shell.)

One of the shop owners where I take the SL has an E36 M3 that is his special car. Completely tricked out. Manual swaps are certainly not difficult in those cars. Like anything else, just a matter of pesos.

From what I know of paint/body work, depending on your level of disposable income and the reality of how bad the paint really is, sometimes paint/body work isn’t worth doing. My Neon had a gaping rust hole at the bottom of the b-pillar in the rocker area. First I duct taped it. Then I fiberglassed, bondo’d and painted it. Then the car got totaled roughly a couple months later. With that experience, I would really just go after having the worst things looked at by a shop that specializes in rust repair as they can tell you specifically how bad a panel is by tapping it (they showed me how to tell, and it’s basically how soft a panel feels, and by what sound it makes when you tap on it). Often times they’ll tell you that the only way to deal with it is to cut the rust out and weld in new metal and sand/paint/blend. Unfortunately though, that’s really expensive. Even the “affordable” body shop I go to isn’t particularly cheap (but for doing an entire door, rust repair and blending across adjacent panels it was surprisingly affordable).

$5k could paint an entire car, and I’m hard pressed to say your M3 needs a new paint job. If it’s just a swirly clear coat or scratches, a wet sand, touch up and good detail can make it look like a new car for maybe a few hundred. I’m having that done to the SL even. There’s a hazy spot on the passenger door and places where some paint and body work has been done that doesn’t match very well, or wasn’t masked off properly. You really just need to talk to the right person about what the car really needs, otherwise you’re just throwing money at it, and unless it turns into a really desirable collector car, you’ll never see a return on that money.

Oh no, if you look close the paint is totally fucked. It’s been REALLY badly repainted. Runs, overspray, improper prepping, rough spots, the whole car is orange peel. Plus there’s this lovely little riveted in and bondo’d patch on the back fender.

Kinja'd!!!

The rockers are rusted, part of the wheel arch is bondo, the hood and bumper and nose piece are beyond repair and have to be replaced. Oh yeah, and the trunk lid which is starting to rust out.

There’s a damn good reason why I’m trying to sell it and that’s because it needs SO MUCH cosmetic work.

A wet sand would take care of the orange peel, guaranteed. The rusty bits? I’d just find a same color trunk lid and for the wheel arch, just let a body shop re-bondo and blend. I have no reason to believe that wouldn’t be able to turn the situation back into your favor for not nearly as much money.
