So after coming off the lake this past weekend, my Tahoe battery died suddenly. Didn’t find this out till Monday, right before work. I figured the battery is bad and was probably never changed since the late 2000’s so i got one on sale for the low low. It killed that battery too. It seems there’s something that isn’t turning off at all even after cutting the engine. It happened so suddenly. Now I have to disconnect the negative terminal every time I get out of the car. Never had electrical issues before and now I know. They’re the worst.

You have to attack the gremlin methodically . List things that aren’t switched off that can drag the battery....

starter solenoid, alternator, dome light, under hood light, brake lights, headlights, accessory (cigarette lighter)

Often you can use the pull a fuse till it stops method, or a multimeter to see where the draw is on the fuse box.

Check the basics first, make sure the glove box light is going off when closed. Check the brake lights arent staying on, stuff like that.

I figured that I would need to go through every fuse to see what is drawing a charge. Which might take a whole weekend

Are you sure it’s not your alternator?

Just sayin. Start it, pull your battery cable, if it dies it’s the alternator.

I’ll try that when I get home. Thanks!

The alternator should keep your engine running without the battery. If your alternator is bad, your battery will keep your engine running until it is out of juice. So if you get it started and pull your battery cable and it keeps running, your alternator is fine and you know the battery is a good battery then you do have a electrical drain. If you pull it and it dies, then your alternator is bad.

Also, I have heard that the more modern a car is the worse this can be. I have done it on 2005 and older model cars without issues. I have not tried this on anything newer than that and am leary of doing it, but I probably still will if I have to.

You said Tahoe so I know it’s a chevy and you shouldn’t have any issues doing this.

Disconnected the battery and she kept running. Now I guess I’m on to find the one fuse that’s still drawing power!

Well, I’m sorry the fix was not easy for you, however I am glad you don’t have to replace an alternator as I just replaced mine and it was $200.
