It may be a little late for the euro crowd, but I’m looking for input here. My sister and her husband are moving to Germany for 2 years and leaving in a few weeks. They are leaving their cars here in the US and looking to buy a car when they get over there. Any suggestions on what they should look at? What they should avoid? I know they have full base privileges and will be able to buy gas on base (but no diesel) so they will probably go for a gasoline car over diesel.

That Seat wagon that was on the front page seems like a decent option: http://jalopnik.com/this-nurburgri…

No kids. No idea on budget, but I’m guessing $20k give or take? Although my BIL did mention they might look into buying a US Spec C-Class Benz and bringing it back with them.

If they are going to a city they can likely do fine without.

Depending on how the iM does here, I’d suggest the Auris (a rebadged iM). I know very little about foreign markets.

Depends on what they want. Do they want performance, economy (very important in europe), ultimate reliablility, whatever etc.? New or used?

I never know. They have no kids, which I think opens things up a bit. One minute they are talking about a used VW Golf, next minute a new US spec C-Class Mercedes so they can bring it back to the states with them.

Agreed, probably. I think they are just going to move over there and see how it goes for the first month or two, they may not end up getting one a all.

Then again public transport is good enough that one can reach most places (especially in and around larger cities) fairly easily.

Yeah, I think if they’re smart they will at least go for a month or two and see what their situation is like before purchasing a car.

When I was there the transit was awesome. You were never too far away from something. Bus, streetcars, U and S bahnen in nearly every major city. On time and quick. The problem is if there is a strike. This happened when I was in Berlin, DB drivers went on strike and S Bahn service was severely cut. There are many places where one can acquire a Mietwagen (rental) as well. So they definitely won’t have to get a car right away.
