Let’s say you have $50,000 to find a family SUV or wagon. You can only buy one car, what do you buy?
It has to be USDM and “Miata” is not an applicable answer if you value your life.
I’d take this 2012 Cayenne with a 6-Speed manual for $47,981.
Why?
1. It’s still a Porsche
2. It’s a manual luxury SUV
3. It’s got low miles
4. AWD
Now, for finding $50,000. That’s going to be the complicated part.

A really nice used RV
...or Volvo XC90
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:44 |
|
It will run for ~20+ years, which is what our current family SUV is doing.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:45 |

This one . I can keep it forever, and it will do just about everything you could ever want out of it.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:45 |
|
And I’d bet you can fit a Miata in your budget still.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:45 |

The XC90 is a damn fine looking SUV.
The leather seems prone to jean color stains though. I saw one at the auto show, the seats were incredibly stained already.

Damnit, only 5 seater. :( Suburban.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:46 |

Damn, that’s nice. I want that also.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:47 |

You’d be a giant soccer mom.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:48 |
|
Yup, I’d go for the Volvo. Though the package I have to have is way more than $50k.
(It’s Inscription. That wood feels so nice)
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:50 |

I wanted a Land Cruiser but was too lazy to look for used ones that were under $50K but Dwhite found one so I’ll steal it from him :P
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:50 |
|
Good, because that Lexus thing is a massive no no.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:51 |
|
Well shit...
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:52 |
|
Idea one: buy a 2009 Dodge Magnum for under $15,000, dump the remaining $30K+ into it for fun. Available in AWD of wanted.
Idea two: Really wanna say new XC90 but the average price near me is $55k, so just a bit over. Otherwise I’ll say a Grand Cherokee, preferably SRT if they've depreciated enough.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:52 |

I’m going to have to agree with you, but I’d get an auto (because Atlanta).
![]() 07/19/2015 at 19:58 |

Found this E55 on Cars.com for about 25k, 78k miles. Bank the rest for maintenance.

Not bad at all! The wheels would look great in black.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:01 |

If we choose something cheaper, can we keep the rest of the money? Because lately my partner has decided he really likes the Jeep Renegade, especially in orange. If not, we’d go with the Ford Flex. He’s always liked it for some reason.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:02 |
|
But you would have $50,000 all to yourself!
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:05 |
|
How many people does this “have” to seat? 7? If less than that this is a bit easier to manage.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:06 |
|
Just an SUV or a wagon. The amount of seats doesn’t matter.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:09 |

Safe, Supremely Comfy, Capable, Pedantic, Boxy and Supercharged.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:11 |
|
So you’d basically get a newer version of the one you currently have?
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:12 |
|
A SAAB 9-3 Sportcombi Aero with the V6 and manual. Many can be had for 10-12k. Dump about 3-4k in tuning and whatnot.
Presto a classic torque-steering SAAB that belts out about 450 hp and 600 tq and still completely docile
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:12 |
|
But $50,000 to buy anything! And only one car...
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:17 |
|
Yes, basically what I would have gotten in the first place if I had enough money. I only had a small issue with the battery so far, everything is working perfectly and I already put 1k miles in the thing.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:17 |
|
I’d probably go the Tahoe route.
Which ironically is what I'm looking at now that the Audi won't baby.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:18 |

Magnum SRT8, or an AMG wagon with the third seat and hood ornament
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:18 |
|
I was just about to ask how reliability was going, haha.
Glad it’s working out though! What level of armor does it have?
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:20 |
|
Found on Ebay for just under 17k, its in Philly so you could even get Doug to go check on it for you. Spend the rest on what little maintenance it needs and spend the rest on whatever overland gear your heart desires.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:22 |

My first stop would be a psyciatrist to figure out why I want this.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:22 |

III-A, the highest level civilians can have. I guess mileage is playing an important role in reliability, 38k miles isn’t all that much.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:26 |

Yukon SLE 4x4 with preferred package and upgraded 20” wheels. It’s ~$53,000 new, but I can guarantee you its can be talked down to under $50k.
If you won’t count that, just give me a previous gen Esclade ESV AWD. Newest and lowest mileage I can find. Black over black Platinum.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:32 |
|
I’ve been considering the same thing: Cayenne. Prices for those seem to be consistently in the mid-$40k range at Carmax, and for my 20 miles commute the MPG isn’t a big deal. I currently have an ‘11 MX-5 and ‘01 Chrysler Voyager as a utility vehicle to haul around my dogs and whatnot. When I bought the Miata I was dogless (purchased days after my last dog died) and, while I truly love the thing, I’d prefer owning only one vehicle right now. DeMuro has me convinced on the Carmax warranty idea. Owning a garage where tinkering with an NA Miata would also be nice... The main obstacle is my addiction to driving topless.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:36 |

That thing must weigh a whole lot, haha.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:36 |
|
Nah, that first one works!
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:38 |
|
Last time I checked it probably added 150 Kg to the car.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:39 |
|
The doors must be heavy.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:41 |
|
Yes, they close on their own because heavy, the trunk is stupidly heavy.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:42 |
|
Like if the car is parked on a slant with the drivers door open, could it crush you?
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:44 |
|
It could crush your thumb.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:45 |
|
That would be rather unpleasant.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:53 |
|
Not as unpleasant as being shot though.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:54 |
|
Yeah. I like and prefer Saabs. I would look for the best shape and lowest mileage one. Buy that. Then tune the hell out of it. I had a 9-3 Aero convertible and it only had a stage 1 tune, holy hell. 335 hp and 430 tq
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:56 |
|
Oh yeah, for sure.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 20:57 |
|
But there really isn’t that much aftermarket support for most Saabs I’ve seen.
A while back, I was looking into 9-5 wagons before I bought my A4 and the sludge issues combined with the lack of aftermarket support sorta talked me out of it. I ended up with the only A4 that has no performance chips and only one aftermarket exhaust system, so there’s that also.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:12 |
|
You have JZW Tuning who currently holds the record for the fastest SAAB. There’s VTuners, Brewcity Boost, genuine SAAB, Hirsch, bsr, and several more off the top of my head. There’s plenty of intakes, exhaust, and some cosmetics, and quite a few suspensions mods you can do. The only difficulty I’ve had is finding more stuff for my unicorn 9-5 which is 2011, so there is only 3,000 of these in the united States. Whereas the older Saabs are much easier to find, mod, and enjoy.

2012 CTS-V wagon with 28k miles for 48 and a Half. It’s an auto but I’ll take what I can get considering there are only 3 CTS-Vs listed on all of cars.com

This is the best answer. CPO fully loaded 2013 suburban with under 50,000 miles . http://m.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…

![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:24 |

Overland mobile also?
![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:25 |

Backseats fit baby seats, thats practical enough.
scatpack for clarification
![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:28 |

Doesn’t count! Not an SUV or wagon.
![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:30 |

If by overland you mean “conquerer of Winco curbs” then yes!
![]() 07/19/2015 at 21:31 |

Our realities are not the same. Its a wagon compared to my Crossfire in volume and weighs as much as an SUV.

ah i see.

I’m guessing you don’t live in ‘Murica. My nightstand gun would cut through IIIa armor.
![]() 07/20/2015 at 01:04 |

Kevlar is IIIa, and isn't that heavy. Only stood handgun rounds a few times.

Chrysler 300c SRT8

Probably, I don’t think the thieves from the favelas are running around with Winchesters or AR-15s, or at least I hope they aren’t.
![]() 07/20/2015 at 09:56 |

Not a wagon or an SUV!

How about topping DeMuro in going balls-to-the-wall with this Supercharged 510 HP 2012 Range Rover Sport?
http://www.carmax.com/enus/view-car/…
Or just the regular 2013 Range Rover Sport (only 375 HP lol) in a stunning red :)
At $49k, this saves you a grand for that MaxCare too.

they were sold as a wagon.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:10 |

In what country? I know they sold the 300 as a wagon in Europe, but never the USA.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:11 |

here in Oz they did.
i assumed they did in the USA.
clearly i’m wrong by the sounds of it.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:13 |

Nope, that was the Magnum stateside, where they did sell an SRT version.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:15 |

here in Australia.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:19 |

But the rules say it has to be USDM!
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:22 |

replace Chrysler with the Dodge Magnum SRT then.
problem solved.
![]() 07/21/2015 at 08:29 |

10/10 would solve again.
