Kinja'd!!!

I found myself in a dilemma. Car has been in the bodyshop all week, and hasn’t been painted. I get a call this morning saying the car has rust holes and are asking for input.

Fortunately, they’re isolated to the quarter panels, with identical damage on both sides.

I was given two choices, that cost about the same labour-wise..

Either keep existing front quarter panels and patch rust holes due to dirt buildup in the inside (VW A4 chassis car owners take note, or any car for that matter), and repaint..

or..

get new QPs and paint to match.

also, please bear with the purpleness and banding, camera sensor is burning out.

I chose the latter, because it is a better long term fix, as there are some chips in the hood that needed to be taken care of, which will be fixed when blending. they’re also taking care of the rust bubbles coming up on the rear, as seen here.

Once the car comes out, it’s due for a good wax/claybar, and those headlights will be clearer than a diamond by next weekend.

These guys are very good at what they do, and I’d recommend their service, if you’re ever in the Ottawa area and need body repair. They’re also pretty big into Japanese market cars, and have various parts and posters hanging around the shop. I saw two EP3s being restored.

Unless it’s some rare numbers-matching car, replacement panels > fixed damaged panels, for the exact long-term fix reason.

Hmm... Not sure how soon this 1/2000 ‘numbers matching’ car will become collectible. I’ve seen them listed for 10K on Kijiji.

Not sure how old the car is or if this was in place when it was new but VW has a 12 year corrosion perforation warranty. Maybe check in to that to see if they can help you there.

Car is an ‘04, and I am aware of said warranty. I am however not sure if it is valid for this car because it has done rustproofing that puts holes in the doorjambs.

Ah, does that void the warranty? I’ve considered doing that mine but I was worried about the warranty.

It’s what my father said, and I haven’t had the chance to contact a dealer to check.
