About who is “mean” and who is “nice” among their co-workers? I can’t be the only one that judges my co-workers on how easy or hard they make my job and If theyve helped me to be more successful...

Because people being mean to you automatically makes your job worse?

This is a hard concept to understand? Assuming you interact with your coworkers at some point throughout your day, coworkers who are nice make your day better (or at least not worse), while coworkers who are mean make your day shittier.

Have a shitty day!

Youd rather have a nice but useless co-worker whose mistakes or apathy cause you to have to work harder?

My days are shittier when my co-workers don’t carry their weight. I don’t care how pleasant they are.

Than a competent person who’s an asshole to me? Yeah. I’d get frustrated with your example, too, but its a lot easier for me to just work harder at something than to deal with a person being a dick.

Nice people are nice to have around. Mean people aren’t nice to have around.

Well then you’re on the wrong bus. I always hired for competence and livability. The combo is harder to find, but worth it for the bus ride, in my opinion.

Bluntness and being “mean” make it easy for people to make you into a scapegoat or otherwise cause greater hardship for you down the road, regardless of whether or not your attitude is justifiable. On the other hand, if you maintain a willingness to keep an olive branch extended or otherwise stay cordial, you might actually incentivize better performance out of your coworkers and invite other positive opportunities. Getting stabbed in the back or otherwise let down is a possibility either way, so you can only gain by maintaining good relations with your peers.

Unless you’ve found that magical workplace that’s a pure meritocracy, you have to play the politics.

Read “ Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard ”.

TL;DR: history is littered with the broken dreams of geniuses who “didn’t play well with others.” You will be more effective if you can mobilize people and you do that by earning respect and trust.

The only thing you have control over is you.

Improve yourself. Be neither incompetent nor unpleasant. Bonus points for helping others improve themselves.

Oh, and this: http://www.chron.com/news/slideshow…

Only 6 percent of wealthy people speak their minds while 69 percent of poor individuals say what they think.

The funny part is for a long time I did inspire respect because even though i can be a dick when other people make my life , I actually give a shit.
