I'm thinking of getting a cheap Hyosung scooter to ride around town, so that I can save up for a decent car. For under $2k, what could possibly go wrong?

Why no CBR250? Those can be had close to new for around 2k

i just bought a leftover 2013 yamaha zuma 50f for $2000 out the door...

My buddy just bought a Honda Ruckus. They are an absolute blast, full throttle 100 precent of the time. Its limited to 40 I think. And honestly the little 49cc engine has no issue keeping up with traffic.

dude. dude dude dude.
CBR 125 or grom

Honda Ruckus or a Yamaha BWS, keep it under 50cc and no moto license required (here in BC CAN at least).. I would do it but hard to carry my kiddos..

Not a bad choice....thinking of a 50cc? 125cc-150cc? Areyou buying new or used? I don’t have any myself, but I’ve also been thinking of picking up a scooter an as economical (but also fun!) way to get around town and run quick errands. Hyosung shouldn’t be bad as they are South Korean....you really want to stay away from all the Chinese brands though, terribly shoddy from all I’ve read.
Anything Japanese is good too, of course, although more expensive. You can also look at Taiwanese brands - Sym and Kymco are both highly regarded worldwide. I’ve quite fallen for the
2015
Kymco Super 8 150R (or 150X, although I like the subtle differences on the R better) and it’s a little over $2K brand new ($2200). You can get older models of the Super 8 though used for less and they’ve got decent reviews.

But uh you could buy a car for that much.
fun intensifies

Unfortunately in Kelowna, I can only buy a J-body for that much.

I’m just looking for a little 50cc to putter around town on.

Where in BC are you located? I'm moving to Kelowna.

Groms are too much money in BC, and my mom doesn't like the idea of a proper motorcycle, even though they're easier and safer to ride.

I had a 2006 Hyosung SF50 that I eventually put over 2000 miles on. I got it for a song and a dance in 2008 when it was still sitting on this guys lot. It wouldn’t start so I think I payed 600 bucks for it. For almost a year it was my only mode of transportation. They are actually really well made. I’ve had Honda Elites, Honda Sprees, and a couple of GY6 scooters. They Hyosung was my favorite. Front suspension is totally overbuilt, disc breaks, good sized tires, very comfortable ride for a 50, but that’s because a scooter that size should really be 100+ cc’s
After I got a car again, I decided to modify the Hyosung as much as reasonable. New Pipe, re-jetted the carb, removed the restrictor in the CVT, clipped some nanny state wires, new roller weights, new belt. The top speed is very limited on this model. You will never get it to do much over 40 however you can make it accelerate like a bat out of hell as long as you don’t care about the noise from the aftermarket pipe. Learned a lot about two-strokes along the way too.

Two-strokes aren't bad. Trying to get the mixture right, however, may be a PITA.

Ruckuses are great. I wish I could afford one.

Time for me to brush up on my bargaining skills, then.

Mainly because of insurance and practicality.

up the road in the ‘loops.. check out Kijiji and Castanet, there are a ton of BWS around $1000.. not many Ruckus though..

Mixes the oil for you, no biggie. However I have heard of some folks with modified 2-strokes who disable the auto-mix and just mix their own. I never had a problem. You can spot check the plug if you think you are running too much or too little oil.
![]() 07/16/2015 at 18:31 |

It mixes the oil for you? Phew. Now I don't see any downsides to this plan.

I'll try and find a good BWS. Barring that, Hyosung FTW!

I don’t have any experience with hyosungs but if its anything like the cheap chinese generic GY6 scooters I’ve been around there are a couple things you can do right away:
Look for a small pink or red wire connected to the battery (much smaller gauge than the other wire attached). I’ve read around places that its usually connected to an electronic rev limiter and by removing it you can usually rev a little higher.
Take off the protective/decorative plate on the exhaust. Drill a bunch of holes and then replace the plate. This in theory will get a little extra power out of the tiny engine and if you’d like there is plenty of aftermarket support for GY6 50cc engines (intake, bore kit, exhaust, etc.).
Most scooters aren’t the most reliable things, but they are cheap to fix, especially if you do it yourself. I replaced a clutch and a drive belt with literally no experience.
Look for a cheap generic one on craigslist or similar and you won’t feel guilty beating the hell out of it. I bought a 2008 in 2012 with ~400 miles on it for $550 and sold it three years later for $450 with 2100 miles on it. Total cost of ownership was:
550 (scooter) + 20 (3 oil changes, every spring) + 45 (clutch and drive belt parts) + ~70 (gas) + 36 (registration) - 450 (selling price) = ~271 for 1700 miles of freedom

I think mine looked pretty good once I peeled off all the graphics. These pics were before I did the pipe. That plate is your major restriction. Once removed, the carb really needs to be re-jetted too.

They share almost nothing in common, however there is a wire coming from the CDI which can be snipped to remove the rev limiter.

It looks very nice when de-stickered.

They have cavaliers there?
![]() 07/16/2015 at 19:47 |

Yup. It’s either a scooter, or a Cavalier.

Get a Cav! Then rename urself the J-body man!

Sounds like a plan. Then we’ll have a recent mid-size sedan, a van of some sorts, and something terrible with an awesome homemade SRI.

I figured which is why I’d go with a GY6 instead. The parts may be cheaply made, but they’re extremely cheap and easy to find.

You could end up with your hip bone connected to your ear bone

If you’re thinking scooter (I personally love scooters) Maybe spend a bit more upfront and get a quality unit. My first pick would be the Yamaha Zuma X at $2900 CAD but I think with a Cosco membership you save $400 bucks and that’s the one I’d get.
If you really want to be frugal I’d look at the Piaggio Typhoon at $2100 canadian I think it’s a pretty good deal and a hell of a lot better than a Hyosung.
I see the appeal of a scooter since you don’t need a bike licence, your car driver’s licence is all you need and the insurance is dirt cheap maybe $200 bucks a year tops. For in town in a place like Kelowna I think it would be a blast.

it’s awsome, i’m 200lbs and i hit 40mph with it no problem, i had the dual headlight wiring kit waiting for it, so i put that on for better vision and visibility. I will warn you though, 50cc scooters are a gateway drug. I’m already looking for a bmw r/90 to make a cafe racer.
