Once you’ve read the excerpt below, click the picture to head over the AutoTempest blog and find out what earth shattering realization I’ve come to.
Side note, are you a fan of this format or would you rather I share the whole article here on Oppo? I’m figuring all of this out as I go and value input from the Oppo community.
Look at that picture, what do you see? Easy access to a generously sized cargo area, overly accentuated wheel arches, the reflection of some apartment buildings in the windows. Ok, now look closer, you’re missing something big, something that most everyone, myself included takes for granted. Do you know what it is? Study this photo of the Impreza sedan for a minute and then see if you can spot the difference.

Yeah, I’ve never encountered a situation where I needed one of those on my coupe.

Oh gods, I remember what happened the last time this came up. Everyone hit the deck!
(A bit in jest, thank you for wording it better than the last guy)

... I strangely want an Impreza hatch now.

wagons are better than hatchbacks

Yup, it bugs me to no end not having one. My last three vehicles had one, my Civic does not. Damn you Honda. Why won't you sell us a Civic Hatch? I should have went with a damn Fit (too bad I can't fit in one comfortably).

Driving in the UK, I found myself pining for sedans that weren’t German - everything on the road being a hatchback. If a car is the exact same other than extra roofline between the hatch and the sedan, the hatch wins out on practicality, but if a platform offers more tail length in the sedan I’ll pick it every time. I prefer the look, the loading characteristics of a trunk, and being able to see where the car’s butt is, regardless if it’s out slightly further. Studiously not spoiling here the hatchback secret ingredient you reveal, I could point out that airflow being different, the same car might not need the secret ingredient in a sedan that it would need in a hatch. I can’t say its absence bothers me, either.

spoiler, well it’s actually under the spoiler, nevermind
Um probably because you don’t need a wiper on a sedan, water wicks away on the steaper sedan/coupe rear window.

Nope, when it comes to looks, the 3 sedan looks waaaay better. It doesn’t resemble the back of a scared beaten dog.

Wouldn't mind a 3 door Golf.

Hatchback > sedan with puny trunk.
Hatchback < full size sedan with real trunk.
Hatchback < wagon.
Sedan with ‘real trunk’:
Wagon:
(for some reason all my pics of this car include the roof box, even though it’s only on about 3% of the time...)

In case anyone didn’t want to click the link, the author is referring to the near useless piece of garbage hanging off the back of the car. The rear wiper. You know the one that costs as much as both wipers on the part of the car you actually need to see out of? Yeah, that one. Not once have I ever wished I had one on any sedan or coupe I have driven. It has been rarely used on either minivan I have owned. Personally, I am of the opinion that if the vehicle was designed correctly you wouldn’t need it or just use the side mirrors. /rant

‘73 LeSabre. I drive it regularly except in the salt. It’s under a bit of bodywork, here’s how it looks today:

That thing is so righteous! You’ve just solidified what car I’m writing up for the next Malaise Monday post!

Tanks! I mean, THanks! This thing is no longer malaise, besides the need for a little more bodywork and to get the A/C working again. It’s large cube engine now has the power it should have all along...
That 1970s 455 has a very nice EFI system on it now, along with many other customizations that you can’t see, and holy moly does this car move faster than it should!

That is so badass.

So did I blow your mind yet? ;) You should see how much crap we can fit in the trunk! I can carry 6 passengers and all of their luggage for a week, easy. A month maybe! AND it’s FAST!
