Blew Off a Unicorn This Weekend

Saw a pretty rare car and dismissed it for being a kit. Apologies to those that came here thinking I fellated a mystical horned equine.

My buddy and I saw this in the parking garage of the Austin Cars & Coffee this past weekend. I had no idea what it was and could only make out “Puma” on the back decklid. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! We stood around it for a while debating on what it was and decided it might be a kit car based off a VW. I wish I had taken more photos of it.

Turns out that we were almost right. Puma was a small automaker in Brazil back when Brazilian regulations restricted imports to encourage domestic car manufacturing. Puma started off using DKW parts to build their coupes. They moved to VW parts later and stuck with them all the way into the mid-90’s when the company folded. For a while during the 70’s and 80’s, they sporadically imported the cars as kits to the US. I think the number of cars produced varies on who you ask but I haven’t seen another like it.
