We have a 2001 acura mdx. Honda j35a3 engine. It’s at 170k miles, an interference engine, and on the original timing belt. We need to get that done soon. When it goes, at best, it’s taking valves with it, at worst, pistons.

yikes, service interval is 105k miles on those
DO IT STAT!!!

Yep, as soon as I found out it was 170k old, I told them it needed to be done, NOW. They are trying to get the money together.

Retrofit with chain. is that possible?

Not likely.

Yipe. Too bad

Yes it is. And it’s probably easier to pull the engine to do the belt. That says something...

Water pump should be replaced at the same time.

Yep, and all pulleys.

If this is the same one you posted in your quiz, see if you can convince them to ditch it rather than fix it.

Damn make sure you check the oil, brakes and tires too.

I have. They want to replace it with.....A pilot.
I can’t win for loosing.

I do the oil every 5k, tires need rotating, doing it next month, brakes have ~2500 left on em. Suspension and motor mounts need to be done soon as well.
I generally do the maintenance, and it hit me to ask about the timing belt. Glad I did.

There’s a DIY thread on Acurazine if you feel thrifty. The labor from most shops is $1000 or more.

We got $1200. I’m going to try it my self I think. We need motor mounts anyway so I may pull the damn thing, and do it all at once.

There’s dozens of sucess stories on there. After doing a 2000 honda civic timing belt and water pump I think I’ll pay for someone else to do it on the MDX. There’s so little room, and you need to make or buy a tool to keep the 2 cams gears locked in time while you change the belt.

I’m aware. The alternator took forever because of a lack of room.
That’s why I’m thinking I’ll pull it (I have tranny jack, engine hoist, lift, everything I need), and do the motor mounts, water pump, pulleys, timing belt, and suspension, also rotate tires. Then we’re good.

Acura chain would have failed long before

srsly? get your act together honda

It’s plenty of room. I do them in under 3 hours. Be sure to tell replace the t-tensioner. I've not seen any of the pulleys fail.

Yeah a lift would make it 10 times easier. If you can lift the car off the engine and subframe it would be easy after that.

Yep.

The timing chain being better than the timing belt is a myth. I've done chains on GM cars with under 50k miles
