I’ve been looking for a new vehicle, and my attention has turned to a new (to me) truck. I’ve got a 2000 F150 now, but it’s pretty rusty...I love the truck, but I want a cleaner one.

In my searching, I found something that I find pretty interesting:

So that doesn’t look interesting at all. It’s a 2000 F150 XLT 4x4 just like mine, but it has about half as many miles as my truck. It’s far less rusty, despite having a rot hole on the floor of the bed...my truck is more rust than metal at this point.

Here’s the interesting bit:

I’ve always wanted a full size truck with a stick, and here we are. He didn’t list anything about the engine, because Craigslist, but my research indicates that the only engine you could get with a Supercab 4x4 was the 4.6 liter V8.

The thing that gives me pause is that one of the reasons I want a truck is towing, and Ford rates this combination’s capacity at a paltry 2600lbs, less than half the rated capacity for a similarly engined automatic.

I’ve heard it said that they do this basically for people who don’t know how to tow, and that the truck should be able to tow a similar amount to the automatic truck. I’m experienced at towing, so that’s not a concern, I just don’t know if the tranny itself is a weak link or if it was just Ford being super cautious.

Anyway, I’m going to try and take a look at it Saturday. We’ll see how it goes.

Keep looking. My dads rusted out the rocker panels, radiator support, a/c lines, etc. But was savable, luckily we had a friend do it on the cheap, well as cheap as in what was performed, still wasn’t cheap.

Yeah, mine has the rusted rockers as well as a rusted bed. This one looks a bit cleaner, but I'm sure it still has the regular Ford rust spots.

I don’t know anything about these transmissions. But, I know some people who work for local gov’t back in Minnesota who only buy manual trans Ford trucks and they actually use them for real work, often towing very heavy things in ditches and fields. They use F250’s though, don’t know if it’s the same trans or not. But as for maintenance and repairs? Tires, oil changes, brakes, and the occasional u-joint.
