Toyota “ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ” a limited trim for the 2016 Tacoma that will cost upwards of $39,000, people flip the hell out.

Kinja'd!!!

“39 grand for a small truck!!! How dare they!” “40 grand! for a Tacoma?!?!” “

Chevy lets you build a $40,000 Colorado

Kinja'd!!!

“....”

People are strange. Why do they think that because a new more expensive trim is available that things are starting to get out of hand with the whole truck/truck market/world? Also, Why do people feel the need to complain at all about the the fact that nicer things cost more money at all?

For reference, in 2005 a double cab TRD V6 Tacoma cost $29,950, which is $36,500 inflation adjusted for 2015. The 2016 double cab TRD v6 Tacoma will cost $35,500. Its not like they are trying to make things more expensive, its just the cost of things in 2015.

End random rant.

I know it’s not a small truck, but a loaded F-150 (King Ranch) can be up near 70K. This is a steal, IMO.

nah, 40k for a tacoma(or colorado) is ridiculous.

Because the Colorado is “saving the small truck market,” or at least that’s what Jalopnik’s been preaching.

You know, looking at inflation adjustment makes sense as a way to determine pricing. I think the problem lies in the fact that for most people wages haven't kept up with inflation. As such, the vehicle seems too expensive. And I think part of it is also the fact that people consider the Tacoma a small pickup, even though at this point it really isn't anymore. Give people a 20k legitimate small pickup and I think there will be far less heartache about a 40k Tacoma.

Well they start at 22k for a Tacoma, I mean its not like the limited is the only choice. As for it not being a small pickup...it VERY much is in the modern car world, its just everything is bigger. The trouble is that its just not compact like some people want. I think there is an unserved market there that the ram700 or something like it could clean up in. As for wage increases and purchasing power, you are 100% right, but there are still plenty of people out there with money, and Toyota knows that there is a market for a high end small truck. Im amazed its taken them this long to bring it to market.

Yeah, I’m absolutely dumbfounded by this as well. Browsing Kijiji, I’m regularly seeing vehicles between $50k-$60k. Who has that kind of money? Does everyone just go into massive amounts of debt for vehicles? If so, that’s crazy - especially given depreciation on things like trucks. I’d be really curious to do a Jalopnik/OppositeLock survey to see what people on here are actually driving.

Not going to read people’s comments on that article, but I’ll add why I would be worried. This is how we lost the cheap small American truck to begin with. They introduce an overpriced model, people buy them for some reason. Maker sees the higher margins, wants more sales at those margins. Begins to make lower level trims very hard to get/dealers won’t stock them on lots. Then they drop them because “customers didn’t want them”. Jalopnik says “customers wanted them, you just made them hard to get”. Jalopnik commentators say “I’d buy the bottom of the line if it was $2k used from the factory. CP. Gib cheap Taco now”. Toyota laughs and says “Go to Taco Bell if you want a cheap taco.”

Then I’m all like:

Open the door.

Get on the floor.

Everybody walk the dinosaur.

Seems pretty cheap to me considering what you get. a 1995 4runner SR5 3.0 liter V6 4x4 was $24,000 ($37,500 inflation adjusted). A 2015 4Runner SR5 4.0 liter V6 4x4 is $35,900 for a LOT more truck. We just have rose colored glasses about what things used to cost and what that buys now.

I hear where you are coming from completely, but this is called the car market and it happens to EVERY car. Look at the 3 series, its the size weight and power of what a 7 series used to be, not to mention the cost. I think there will be a Renaissance of small, but “cheap”? not likely. people want nice things from a new car, and the idea of bares bones transport is going away.

I think people just make stupid debt decisions when they buy expensive trucks. This is the next debt bubble right? And it will be the banks fault again for stringing people out on debt when the economy tanks under the leadership of Jeb Bush.

If memory serves me right, people were also up in arms at the fact that the Canyonrado could be optioned to $40k.

Which, in terms of “small” (LOL) trucks that are comparable to full-sizes not too long ago, isn’t too bad for a fully loaded model. Plus you NEVER pay MSRP for a truck.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Logansteno: Bought a VW?

I think we need to abandon the term “small truck”. No one calls them that, the manufactures themselves call them midsized...which they are.

“why should I/would you pay this much for a midsize when I can get a fullsize for X”

b) At a comparable price point, I’m getting more stuff on mine.

For me, the complaint is not that it’s a $39k Tacoma, but that it’s a $39k Tacoma that has the exact same chassis and cab as the previous one, and not a completely new truck compared to it’s predecessor.

You can’t slap an updated bed, front end, interior, and powertrain on an otherwise outdated design and call it brand new. It just doesn’t work that way.

And once the older Tacomas that are likely selling cheap disappear from the lots, and the 2016s come in, people are gonna see that, and by then, the Colorado/Canyon twins will really start to eat Toyota’s lunch.

In fact, they’re already doing that in Canada and aren’t too far off here in the US.

In Canada, total Tacoma sales through the end of June are 4,723. Colorado sales are at 2,636 and the Canyon is at 2,337. Combined, that’s 4,973, exactly 250 more than the Tacoma.

In the US, total Tacoma sales this year through the end of June are 88,801. Colorado sales so far are at 41,575 and Canyon at 15,017.

That’s still a big gap, but I’m sure if you compare previous years of the Colorado and Canyon to those of the Tacoma (not counting 2013, when stock of Colorados and Canyons dwindled after production ended, or 2014, when stock of the new Colorado and Canyon were starting to build), it might not seem that big after all, showing the new GM twins are actually picking up ground on the relatively outdated (remember, the chassis and cab have been generally the same since the 2005 model) Tacoma, and Toyota isn’t changing most of the main parts of the truck, which will still leave it feeling outdated, and GM (along with Nissan, whenever they introduce the next Frontier) will surely capitalize on that.

I think the truck market has the greatest price range for anything on the market, including the Golf. You can get a half ton from the $20k range into the $60k range.

Dealers in my area do pre-configured Bro, Extra Bro, and Maxi Bro packages as well to lump in overpriced lift kits and wheel / tire upgrades for an extra $10 - $20k.

Not sure what the uproar is, the market will decide if it’s a good idea or not.

It depends really. Anyone who buys a brand new truck personally to do actual work in is likely an idiot as it will get scratched and dinged in no time. However, if you own a construction company you can do fleet leasing for brand new vehicles at a substantial discount (not fully loaded models) and write off some of the lease payments come tax time.
