What would be the stance on having an Opala, with the V8 from a Camaro swapped in, but with an auto? It would be made in about 2 years, giving enough time to sort it out, and it would be an 18 year old's first car.

What year Impala, and what Camaro engine? A friend of mine had a 69 Impala with a 427 when he was 18 or 19 but it wasn’t his first car. Still, he survived just fine.

From the new gen, more precisely this one:

It would be an Opala, not an IMpala, the Opala is a Brazilian muscle car based on an Opel chassis yadayadayada.

Pretty much it would be this:

Woops! Sorry! My brain only works intermittently. Same friend had a Nova as his first car. I think it was a 72 and had a 350. He managed just fine.

Sorry about that. Like I said to Denver, my brain only works intermittently. I firmly believe that it depends on the person. The guy who had that Impala had a 350 powered Nova as his first car and never got in trouble. Then I knew a guy with a GTO who killed himself by hitting a tree while going way too fast on a narrow back road.

So the L99? Sounds like fun to me.

It works into that equation, it has an auto gearbox

So yeah, 4 point seatbelts, roll cage, pay attention, reminding that here it is a no snow country, but with predictableish rain, and the engine would recieve a detune

I’d actually probably reduce the power so I don't die, I think maybe 200-300 hp would be enough to have fun but not fast to kill myself

If the guy is the mature, responsible type who understands the consequences of underestimating the car then I wouldn’t have any problem. If he isn’t that type then he could get in trouble in any car.

How exactly do you plan to reduce the power?

Most likely with ECU tuning

Honestly there should be no reason that the straight 6 it comes with (250 ci) can’t be useful and powerful as well especially for a first engine.

Kinja'd!!!

It can also be a fantastic father/son project to build a nice hot inline with plenty of ability. The end result is a 200-250hp engine with gobs of torque as well. If you want to go toe-to-toe with other SBC’s at the strip or anything it will be disappointing but what’s the real goal anyway? Enough power to get tickets with a flexible engine to squirt all over town? A unique smooth exhaust note and 7 main bearings to boot.

Chek it out: but if you really want a crazy opala, try one of the atlas inlines. but that’s getting pricey.

Now I’m not saying to forget the V8 swap. It’s something to do as well. I’m just presenting a reliable option that’s already there. I did a writeup on the Opala here a bit ago. Check it out and how it can sound.

The reason I am planning to install a V8 as it would become sort of usable vehicle, with fuel injection and the likes, but tuning the stock engine is an option. It needs enough power to cruise at about 100-120 kph for road trips, but needs to be able to make it to about 160 kph without forcing the motor. Probably, I'd like about 200-250 hp actually, but keeping a lot of confort to use for a 12-14 hour road trip.

160kph was done in my old Volvo 242 with 108hp....and that was forcing the motor so twice the power at least would make 160kph an easy peasy thing. Now, routine maintenance could be much less using a modern LSx engine, but any parts would cost more. Price out an ignition coil pack for one spark plug. In fact, using the smaller LS3 would be a great thing in the end. Probably improve the weight balance so much you would have to re-spring the front and then hve great handling.

The LS3 is an option that I cannot consider as it is absurdly expensive to bring it to Brazil, the option of tuning the standard engine is hard, as the 250 Ci straight six is online found in the SS6 model, which is the most desired and expensive. The plan is to buy a cheap run-of-the-mill 4 cil for about 15000 reais/5000 dollars, so that I could invest more money on the rest of the car, such as in the engine, suspension, brakes and interior
