Because I just stretched my budget to buy an amazing (and expensive) house, and only have the financial headroom for one car for the next few years.
And because I drive 20k-23k miles per year, and 50mpg sounds better than 23mpg.

I looked at all the color choices on MK7 hatchbacks, and it was one of the better ones. I thought reflex silver was my favorite - simply stunning - but I am limited to what is available out there.
On the other hand it’s an SEL, and has the two-tone seats. Which is awesome.

Wow! That's really good. Understandably the auto adds over a grand more but the few dealerships I've been to so far have S models in the range of 26,xxx-28,xxx. That's just the base with like a few options they try to make you get. I'm in the process of trying to find techniques to bring the price down as much as possible
