I feel kind of stupid. I never really knew that Bugatti was French. I suppose I used to know in a vague sort of way. As in, if I were looking at some classics, like a Type 57, there would be some French feeling there.
It’s the Veyron that screwed me up. Being designed by Volkswagen, the Veyron is obviously German! Even the idea of it is so German. So, anyway, with the Veyron basically defining Bugatti these days, Bugatti has been German in my mind.
All cleared up now!
Here’s a Type 57 and a Veyron!

It hasn’t been french since 1963, so there’s that.
Italian from 87-97, german ever since.

I guess there is good reason for confusion. They are assembled in France though.

IIRC this sort of confusion was exploitable in GT5. There was a French Car Race for slow little hatchbacks and things, but the only limitation was French cars. The Veyron might not be the most nimble of hypercars, but I tell you it destroyed a bunch of Peugeots and Renaults that day.
