First little foray into rust repair was successful. I wasn’t able to paint due to the threat of rain, but I should be able to paint tonight with POR 15. Thank to Opponaut 505turbeaux for all the help on this project so far.

I didn’t grind up too high, because I want to get a feel for the painting process before I try to arrest the paint peeling off the fender.

For 12 years of rust belt, I gotta say, my car is doing really really well. I used a wire wheel on a drill, which is a little slow but I prefer it because it gets out of hand a lot less than a grinder. Given this is most definitely amateur hour...that’s probably for the best.

I agree that wire brushes are the way to go for jobs like this. It’s too easy to start grinding holes in the metal with an actual grinding wheel, plus the wires make it easier to get into tight places.

That’s what 505 mentioned. Since it’s amateur hour over here, it appeared to be for the best. Lots of integrity left in those panels. Catching the rust early is key!!

looks like you only have surface rust. :)

Bad news for you, you will have that cavalier forever.

You do know they have wire wheels for 4” and 4-1/2” grinders, right? They’re one of my favorite things. They come in both wheel and cup brush varieties, so you can get different kinds of nooks and crannies with each. One thing, though, is that wire brushes tend to leave traces of oils and smeared paint behind, so I always follow up on them with a lacquer-thinnered rag.

*Chance of rain* is actually a pretty good thing where the POR is concerned, because it uses moisture to cure...

Yeah, I will be degreasing the metal after this of course. It ain’t raining tonight, so we will POR it on.

Also I know that, but I also don’t have a grinder so there’s that!
