So I sold my Tacoma today and that has left me without a car. I’ve been looking at 4runners but I want the v8 and the full time 4wd. Kinda hard to find those so I’ve been looking at the Lexus gx 470 also. Went and test drove one today and everything seemed alright. Had a few bumps and scraps but the car is a 2004 so that’s not to be unexpected. Has anyone had any experience with these cars? I know the 4Runner is gods gift to mankind and will last forever. Will the gx do the same? My understanding was they are built on the same chassis and drive terrain and the interior bits are different.

Well it only has one locking diff but the chasis is suppose to be really good. My mom has a 460 however I can’t mention about how well it does off road since the most off road it’s ever been is a gravel parking lot.

GX is based on the Land Cruiser Prado. They're excellent off-road, if you're into that sort of thing, and luxurious as fuck. My 2nd favorite luxury SUV out there.

I have a 2003. I can’t guarantee you it’ll last forever, but it’ll last at least 12 years so far. HAHAHA. It’s all Lexus quality and nothing on mine has broken down yet other than the front left driver’s seat speaker that’s been loose and making shaking sounds recently. And watch out for the dashboard, we didn’t always make sure there’s a sun reflecting sun shady thingies to put in front of the windshield, but ours cracked. Just a single crack line on the edge, not like a dried desert bed kind of crack.
Also later, possibly even 2004, they have this new Kinetic suspension thing or whatever and I don’t know what it is, but maybe it’s something that can break down? I think they’re distinguished by smoked gray wheels.

Just as reliable as you’d think. Back when i was a freshmen in high school my friends mom bought one fully loaded used. Many years later it was my friends car in college, with it already having 100k+ he assumed he’d just get rid of it after he graduates and gets a job. Nope, he’s at around ~170k trouble free now. I’ll try to find some pictures, a few months ago I helped him spend a weekend fully detailing it because it’s now retired as his daily (mpg obviously wasn’t great and he just picked up a BRZ) and the thing looked SHARP. And it’s not like we went easy on it. Hooned like crazy every winter and it never left us stranded. With some good snow tires, we didn’t even have to dig it out of a foot and half of snow, just mashed the gas (the bumper didn’t like that one haha).
I would totally drive one.

This was a 2004 so it had an air suspension. The dash pad was cracked a little but wasn't really noticeable. The drivers mirror wasn't working. It might be a fuse but I'm not sure. Other than that everything felt great. Lexus quality and engineering. The plan was to do some off-roading but primarily trail riding.

Originally I was trying to find a used series 100 land cruiser in my price range. Quickly figured out they're like finding hens teeth. I'm taking my dad tomorrow to get his opinion on the car and take it for a longer test drive. If everything goes well I'll have a new car.

I think Hammerhead wrote an article a while ago about the offroading of a GX470. http://overland.kinja.com/overland-under…
But regarding the mirror at least, whenever I put it into Reverse the mirror goes ackackackack quietly but still works. At least now I know what is coming for my drivers mirror. HAHAHA

What sound does it make again?

I do believe the GX is one of the last true truck based SUVs out there.

Well it’s an LC Prado in Japan as far as I have seen. Seems to be a good vehicle.

The mirror makes an ack-ack-ack-ack sound. Kind of like a loud plastic toy gear kind of sound when it moves when you shift into reverse.
