The $2,000 car for your 16yo daughter challenge.
Friends daughter is 15 with a permit. We are shopping for a $2,000 car. The number one priority is reliability. Number two is the ability to drive her sisters.
On my short list for recommendation are:
97-99 XJ Cherokee
Camry Solara
1st Gen Acura CL
Accord Coupe
Prelude
04+ Grand Prix
02+ Aurora
Olds intrigue or Alero
01-04 Dakota
s10 Blazer 2 door.

What town do you live in? Maybe one of us can find something on Craigslist today that you can go check out and possibly purchase.

Make sure to pick a car that’s difficult to have sex in.

Cavalier/Sunfire. You just can't kill them. Bonus points if you score a convertible.

Solara, CL, Grand Prix

That does not matter to a sufficiently determined and horny teenager.

I’d reccomend nothing that has back seats that can fold down...
unless he wants grand kids...

if you have the Cherokee on there you should also add similar yr Explorers. I’ll say from experience they can take a beating and still carry on. They also fair well when you go into a parking lot a 45 mph and there are parked cars in your way.

Stick shift Ford Ranger XLT with the jump seats. Can’t text and drive easily while shifting. Dead reliable, cheap to fix, jump seats make it convenient but uncomfortable enough that it wont be used as the go to party vehicle.

Chrysler Sebring? A nice little convertible for a fun sunny say. But it isn't a baby making car.

No! I’ve seen multiple fatal rollover crashes involving that gen explorer. The roof is just too weak and flattens.

You can get all of those for 2k or less? I’ll be damned.
If I had a child, I’d want to put them in something reliable as well. I'd look into the Mazda 3/6, Camry, Corolla, Yaris, Altima, Sentra, Accord and Civic.

Why do people insist on getting their kids freakin absolute jalopies? They are all god damned deathtraps.
This is the only list to look at.

Wouldn’t number one be safety? That said my sister had a well used 03 Saturn Ion and loved it. We only had a problem with the ignition switch staying on even with the key in the off position and out of the ignition entirely. But that should be replaced with the recall.

Dad: “Hey kiddo! We think you should have mobility!”
Kiddo: “OMG! YES!”
Dad: “That’s why we’re buying you...”
Kiddo: :D
Dad: “...driver’s ed classes.”
Kiddo: D:
Kid can buy whatever she can afford from saving paper-route money.
Ford Escorts, Toyota Corollas, 2001-2006 Hyundai Elantras wouldn’t be unreasonable choices if you’re safety and reliability conscious but Echos, Accents and Civics would be more economical.
Seriously, we survived the 80s and 90s driving shitboxes; what’s with the rise of helicopter parents buying their kids SUVs?

For peace of mind, something cramped with only two seats.

I’d go with Accord. Big but relatively light. Efficient and dead-on reliable if maintained properly.
