Well, It’s a bit slow tonight, so what the hell? Ask me anything. At last count, I have 11 cars. That’s my Porsche up there. I also have a C6 Z06, an e46 M3, a Caddy CTS V-Sport, a ‘70 VW Bus, a ‘95 Bronco, and a bunch of GM trucks (some cool, some not). I also have like 6 boats, or something crazy like that. I used to be a lawyer, but now I’m not because it was super stressful. So now I live off of investments made with that sweet, sweet lawyerin’ money. I collect hobbies ranging from hardcore survivalist camping shit to the noble game of golf, with lots of stuff in between. I hesitate to call myself a connoisseur, but I am an enthusiast and producer of fine craft beer, and an enthusiast, though not a producer (yet), of fine tequila. I split time between San Diego, Baja, and Alaska. I also suffer from fairly severe insomnia, which often leads to boredom, which in turn often leads to shit like this.

So there you go. Have at it.

Pick one car/truck in your fleet that you can keep, and it will be brought back from the dead to showroom condition. You have to get rid of the rest. What vehicle do you keep?

How do you like that Cadillac? It’s on the short list for cars I want my parents to get, but I sat in one during a car show and it felt really short.

Otters or Corgis if you had to fill your backyard with them?

I have an accountant that handles all the financial stuff, and who has strict instructions not to tell me how much money I’m blowing on cars. I keep 2 cars in Mexico, 2 in Alaska, and one at a little hunting trailer at the Colorado River, all of which have adequate garage space. Then I have a 3 car garage and a shop which can handle the 4 fancy cars I keep in San Diego, while the two trucks live outside. As I’ve moved up in the world, I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter how much space you have, there’s never enough for all the cars you want.

The Mexico cars used to be a pain in the ass, because I had to bring them up to California every 2 years to get them smogged and registered, but then I discovered that South Dakota will register anything you’ve got with no inspection or smog test, and now life is easy.

The Caddy is cool. It’s definitely not short. It’s too techy for me though, and I’m kind of bummed I didn’t go with the Chevy SS.

Corgis. The Govt reintroduced otters into Southeast Alaska, and now they’re totally overpopulated, and really fucking up the ecosystem and putting lots of people out of work. So I would murder every otter in the world with a flamethrower if given the chance. Goddamn Sea weasels.

I did! My mom is Master Gardener, certified by the University of California, so I know all kinds of weird plant shit.

I kind of bounced around. Thought I had a legitimate, though outside shot to go somewhere in baseball, but injuries killed that dream. I also wanted at various times to be a commercial fisherman, a cop, a pilot, and a business guy. Early retirement is boring and kind of making me revisit the business guy idea.

Has to be the most boring vehicle I own. ‘09 Silverado 2500. My various hobbies require me to tow shit pretty frequently, so I simply couldn’t live without a legitimate tow vehicle.

If I could have a tow vehicle in addition, I’d go with the M3. I had to abandon it as a DD because I got too many tickets, but goddamn I love driving that car.

I did civil litigation. Plaintiff work. Basically suing big companies that fucked people over. It was actually wonderful and super fulfilling, but I found myself getting too involved and working 100 hour week after 100 hour week. Basically got rich and burned out way too fast.

I love the M3, but my favorite car I’ve ever owned was my ‘97 e39 528i. Millions of stories man. I’ve driven cross-country 9 times. Ran from a weird dude trying to chase me down. Street raced like an idiot in college. How much time you got?

I actually ate tons of Ramen and stretched myself scary/ridiculous/insane/irresponsible thin to buy my Z06 while I was in college. So that’s been my dedicated hoonmobile ever since. And I frankly can’t think of a better one. Goddamn that car is terrifying.

Also, I’ve seen the Civics at the drag strip, and I have nothing but respect, but FWD is for chumps.

So I was DDing the M3, but I got a bunch of tickets, because something about that car just destroys my self-control. So I bought the CTS so I wouldn’t be tempting fate in the M3 every day. But I still drive the M3 pretty frequently. Also, in my early retirement, I find myself doing lots of stuff that requires me to haul lots of dirty stuff, like working on my boats and going fishing and going out to the desert and stuff, so I have a ‘97 Tahoe that I’m cool beating to shit that’s been getting driven pretty frequently.

The Z06 and the Porsche get way too little road time.

My first car was a Suburban that I worked my ass off to buy when I was 14. Then right after my 16th birthday, my dad totalled my Suburban, so he gave me my mom’s e39 and unlimited access to his Sierra as reparations. Between high school and college, I commercial fished crab up in Alaska and made like 25 grand, which I used to pimp out the e39 in typical 18 year old fashion.

My folks live in SD, and I went to college in Miami, so every summer and winter, I would drive cross-country by a different route every time. So I saw practically all of America in that car. Weird shit. Went to something called a Liverwurst festival in Minnesota, got stranded at a gas station in Louisiana and had the best meal of I’ve ever had, consisting of crawfish and catfish, got charged by a Buffalo in Yellowstone, tried to drive through snow on Nitto 555Rs in Colorado after staying at a haunted hotel. I did the whole street-racing thing in Miami. I once beat a Porsche Turbo S in a very ill-advised race through traffic, which made me somewhat of a local celebrity. I once drove by a music-video shoot and ended up shooting the shit with the director (who loved my car), and ultimately hanging out in the studio with Flo-Rida. Drove from San Diego to Seattle stopping only for gas, and was so tired at the end that I was hallucinating that the trees on the side of the road were reaching out to grab me. Made an FA/18 pilot beg me for mercy while hooning in the Fuddruckers parking lot. Almost crashed a Zonda into a Zonda. Shit. There’s probably more.

Kind of just fell into it. I worked 3 jobs my first summer after law school: crim law, jury consultant, and civil lit. I just loved loved dealing with people who had been fucked over, and trying to do right by them. The clients were always the big draw to me. I couldn’t have done corporate law, because I needed to be able to look at a guy, or a family, and say ‘That guy got fucked, and I need to help him.’ So I stuck with that job, violated every ABA rule by working 80 hour weeks all through law school, and advanced rapidly after I graduated. IP is an awesome field though.

Yeah, it is big. That’s kind of what I was looking for. The M3 I was DDing before the Caddy was just way too easy to throw around, so I wanted something bigger that didn’t beg me to toss out the rear end around every corner. So the V-Sport was a nice compromise. Doesn’t nag me to hoon, but also has the balls to smoke a bitch in a Mustang when necessary.

I was OK. I was always a pretty good hitter, but I had trouble with the breaking ball. I played a mean defensive first base. I also pitched pretty well. I never had huge velocity, I topped out in the mid-70s, but I could throw all kinds of junk, and was always pretty successful. I could throw more than 10 pitches reasonably well by my freshman year in high school. But I blew my knee out pretty thoroughly playing football my sophomore year, then my first game back I tore the shit out of my rotator cuff trying to tackle Reggie Bush. So I couldn’t pitch pain-free, and I was so slow that I was getting thrown out from right field on base hits. If I had rehabbed hard and stuck with it, I probably could have played D2 or D3 somewhere, but instead I switched to Golf, which was fun. Even sans-injuries, it probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere, but having the dream die was a pretty tough pill to swallow for a 17 year old.

Hell no dude! I’ve learned that you can either have a family, or lots of cool shit. It’s one or the other. And I really enjoy all my cool shit.

I’m honestly not really sure man. I guess just enough to pay off some real estate. Once rent income starts rolling in, you can parlay that into mortgages on other properties, which generate more rent income, and so on. It’s pretty easy in theory, but realistically, you have to be lucky.

I played through little league and was pretty good. Was one of the best catchers in the city league and was a decent hitter and pretty good first baseman. Sadly I took a couple years off and never got back into it. Fielding was always my strong suit along with hitting. Wasn’t ever really fast and had a decent arm. Really, really wish I had stuck with it because I think I’d be doing decently well had I. Miss it more every day. Probably never would’ve gone anywhere past HS or college but it was a dream I let slip away...

Basically the best rule to live by as a lawyer is to never talk about shit. But I’ve maintained sufficient internet anonymity that I can go into some detail. I worked in criminal law after my first year in law school, and I was basically put in charge of dealing face-to-face with this one nutso client that everybody else in the firm was sick of. So I had to go down to jail to talk to this dude almost every day. And he was a fairly prominent and respected professional in San Diego, and he really caught a tough charge. And it was insane, because this guy was such a piece of shit, but he so didn’t deserve to go to prison. Plus, his family depended on him working to support themselves, and they wouldn’t be able to even keep their house if he went to prison. And it was so tough to work so hard for this dude who was such an asshole, but I had to do it, and all the evidence was against him, and I knew it was an exercise in futility trying to defend this dude. And it was just a mess. And of course, he got the max sentence, and I felt so shitty, like I’d ruined a bunch of people’s lives, and it just made me super jaded, and made me lose so much faith in the legal system. It still stresses me out thinking back on it.

If you want comfort, don’t go for a Corvette. It’s a wonderful second car/hoonmobile, but don’t even think about it as a DD. Sure it can fit your golf clubs in the back, but the clutch is super stiff, you frequently spin the tires on accident, and the center console turns to magma when the trans gets hot. I’ve driven lots of Corvettes, and in my humble opinion, it gets no better than a bone stock C6 Z06. It’s great in the canyons, just make sure you have a shoulder for when the back end flies out. I love it. It scares me every time I drive it, but that’s kind of the point.

Also, I’ve been on the track with Vipers, and they seem to be a bit of a mess in the corners where the Z06 is drifty, but very predictable.

I had a bit of a hole in the sedan area of the fleet, so I was looking at stuff that could fit 4 grownups comfortably. An ATS-V would have kind of overlapped with the M3. The full V wasn’t out yet when I was shopping, and I didn’t really want to wait. Plus, I know from driving the Corvette that managing 500+ horses on a daily basis is a pain in the ass. So 420 horsepower in a nice-handling sedan that doesn’t beg me to hoon sounded just right. I do wish I had gone with the Chevy SS though. The more time I spend operating all my controls through a touchscreen, the more I hate it.

If that happens, the first thing I get will probably be a Delta Integrale, an e9, or a big American cruiser (probably a ‘58 or ‘59 Impala, suicide Continental convertible, Riviera, or some kind of Caddy). I consider myself to be a pretty good driver, but honestly, my Z06 is about as much car as I can handle comfortably. I can’t even get close to unlocking the full potential of that car. I don’t really have any desire to get anything faster than the Z unless I do a dedicated drag car. I’m more interested in stuff I find cool or interesting at this point.

It’s an ‘87 Turbo-look Cab with the color-match Fuchs. It’s super, super rare, and now it’s worth stupid amounts of money. It’s all original except for the convertible top, which I replaced about a year ago. It was the personal car of a Porsche dealer in Orange County for like a year after it was new, then my dad bought it from that guy and drove it on and off until a few years ago when I bought it off him.

It’s peppy and fun, but not really fast. I haven’t spun it yet, which is good. I don’t drive it as much as I should, because I have really long legs and don’t really fit. I have to do some weird contortionist shit to get to the clutch, and I start cramping up after 20 minutes or so. But I’m a sentimental guy, and I like seeing the old man’s car every time I walk into the garage.

Yeah, sure. But I’m a guy who appreciates a value. With the exception of the Porsche (which I bought for maybe 20% of what it’s worth today), I could sell all my cars together and still not come up with half of what a new entry-level Ferrari costs. I could go used, but I’ve driven some F430s and Gallardos and stuff, and frankly I like my Corvette more. The Z06 is more car than I could ever use, so I don’t feel any urge to buy anything faster. Also, I feel like my M3 is the perfect setup for my skill level, and I have just as much fun carving twisties in that as I would in an exotic. Exotics are cool and all, but at this point I’m way more interested in weird hipstery shit like e9s and Lancias and old American iron.

I’ve been thinking about it. The problem is that I can’t get any buddies to join up with me, and I’d feel weird just joining some random team.

Not really man. I guess just try not to sell your soul. It’s getting harder and harder to avoid though. But try to do something fulfilling if you can. If you’re good at it, you can be successful without working for some big soulless lawsuit mill.

I had no idea when I was 20. I kind of just went to law school because the only thing I learned at business school in college was that I was shitty at business, so I had to switch gears. Then I ended up loving dealing with the clients in plaintiff work, and stuck with it.

I have always heard working for a big firm isn’t very fun. It would be nice to start an independent but I figure it is a pretty risk

Huge risk. I got lucky and fell into a small firm with a bunch of cool dudes. I don’t think I could have done it if I hadn’t been so lucky.

You still managed to burn out though you said. So was the job unfulfilling? And at what age did you burn out?

Sorry if these questions are personal. You don't have to answer them. I'm just nervous haha

No, the problem was actually that it was too fulfilling. I kind of tried to treat clients like friends, and most of the time my clients had been fucked over really bad, so I felt an obligation to go really, really hard and put in insane hours. It just got out of control. And I’d been working since I was like 13 or 14, and when I wasn’t working I was going hard on my various hobbies, and I just got tired. So I’ve been out of lawyerin for less than a year, and I’m in my early thirties.

Well, as a to-be junior in highschool, What I take away from this is if I eat/drink a ton of ramen & water, and work at good paying jobs, I might have actual money left over...

Well sorry to hear you had to leave the business. Glad to hear it was fulfilling though and it certainly looks like you have a lot of hobby cars because of it which is nice. Your whale tail is beautiful by the way.

Thanks for answering all these questions. It was pretty helpful
