Oppo, I am an ambitious 20 year old who probably shouldn’t be dreaming about his next car but already is. I plan to buy something within two to two and a half years and have already made a list, sadly that list is very short. I have down a Genesis coupe and the FRS/BRZ twins (price depending) so far.
I’d love recommendations or personal reviews regarding the two above.
Car requirements:
Coupe, sedan, or hatch
Nothing bigger than a V-6
N/A or forced induction
$10-$12k
Manual
Semi acceptable trunk space
2006 and up though exceptions can be made

Haven’t driven the Genny, but I will say, as someone who test drove a BRZ but didn’t buy one, that they’re amazing cars. THAT SAID, they do have some issues
They’re a little cramped inside, but I always have headroom issues in cars.
The trunk is... usable but not huge.
The power issue is overblown. It feels like a plenty fast car to drive, and at this altitude that’s saying something.
Overall, it’s a sports car. If you don’t particularly need to carry more than one passenger, need a bunch of storage space, or mind a firm ride, they’re lots of fun.

Am I wrong in thinking the Toyobaru twins are still going to be above that 10-12k range in 2.5 years? I just do not seem them depreciating that much that quickly.
I have driven the BRZ and loved it. It is a simply superb car. I did not like the FiST. While a great little car, I did not feel ‘at home’ behind the wheel. Same for the FoST.
I adore my current car, a 2002 SVT Focus. They made them until 2004, so it fits all your other criteria, aside from age. Though, if you can’t wrench on it yourself, owning an SVT can get expensive. What kind of mileage are you looking to get? The SVT needs premium, and my mixed driving only returns ~21 MPG.
There are several more very decent cars that meet your requirements, I just can’t think of any right now.

My TL does 270-300 miles on a tank..but I’m spending $3.15 a gallon with a 14 gallon tank

I had a friend who owned a WRX, the oil pump went and so did his engine. Admittingly, I’m scared of owning one due to that and what I’ve read about WRX’s

I’m skinny and 5’ 10”...I sometimes run into issues with head room.

The later ones usually are better than the older ones. Post 2005 is better I believe.

I’m 5’10, but I have very short legs and a very long torso, so I fit in cars more like someone who’s 6’ 4”, and I wasn’t terribly cramped in the BRZ. You should be fine.

I’d be shocked (e: pleasantly surprised, not shocked) if the FR-S/BRZ not at the upper end of that range in 2.5 years. You sometimes see some as low as $15k these days, with a clean title. Most are around $18-20k right now, and I could see a few examples getting down to $12k by then.
In fact, there was a piece here that showed one that sold for $12k+ recently, clean title and good shape. I can’t find the completed listing, though...

Okay, guess I was wrong. Whenever I’ve looked, they always seem like they are still holding their value very well.

As a current owner who will probably be looking to sell next spring, I feel like the value is taking a huge hit.
I hate citing KBB, but a “good” 2013 FR-S with 36,000 miles shows trade-in around $16.5k and private party about $18k. I can see $12k in two years pretty easily.

Aren’t you round Chicagoland? I recall we had a chat about you selling your BRZ; white?
Citing KBB is like linking to Wikipedia, it’s the easiest resource to find ‘credible’ info. And Wiki gets a bad wrap. It is a great resource for resources if one bothers to find all the links at the bottom of the article.

I think I know what half of my garage will look like in a year. Well, more like a third when you consider the size .

I’m 6’ and fat and I fit in one just fine. No one believes me, but I even fit in the back seat.
