2009 328i sedan with sport package and flappy paddles on the steering wheel. 70k miles and $16k, doesn’t seem like a bad deal if it’s in good condition and has been maintained. They’ll be giving me a trade-in value on the E46 as well, so we’ll see what I can get from the dealer for it. I need a $350/month payment like I need another hole in my head, but we’ll see what’s what. If I can get into this with no money down and get rid of my slowly aging whip I might just do it.

Digging the old LR and I thin kthat’s a 7 series next to it? If you go, try and take some pics of other cars on the lot.

That’s just a generic pic I pulled - same color and wheels. If I see anything interesting while I’m there I’ll be sure to grab some iPotato picks for you guys.

Any reason for the auto? just asking as an auto E90 328 (a couple years older) has pretty much soured me on BMW.

Only because it’s there - it’s very difficult to find an E90 manual with the sport package around here for some reason. Plus the price is right on the money, and I figure nothing could be worse than “M” mode in my E46 (5 speed steptronic).

My wife has one of these (09 328i with x-drive), not including oil changes and scheduled services. It’s been to the shop more times than my 2004 X-Type over the last year. Good luck, you’ll need it.

Try and find a 330i

Well, shit.

If you just HAVE to get an auto for some terrible, half-assed reason, then yeah get the d. It’s not worth it for just an auto 328, they’re okay but not that exciting.

carmax + warranty?
![]() 07/08/2015 at 11:06 |

I can get a warranty without going to Carmax for it, but for shits and giggles I looked them up and they’re about the same price with more miles and less option (Xenon lights, sport package and sunroof pretty much ticks all my boxes except for the transmission).
![]() 07/08/2015 at 11:06 |
|
Yeah, transmission needed to be reprogramed becuase it wasn’t shifting correctly. Steering sensor went bad and caused the DSC turn off, bad O2 sensor, needed to replace a 2 year old battery, had to replace two kick plates on the driver and passenger door sills because they just broke off. Oh it’s been a wonderful experience owning this thing, on the upside the run flat tires are only $1200 and don’t last as long as comparably priced non run flats...
But nooooo my wife doesn’t want a LR4 because it’s “unreliable”...

But I don’t want the D.

What does the sport package include that you’d rather have it than a manual?
Manual seems more important than some different body panels and bigger, heavier wheels.

loljk nah it’s too hard to find at dealers. I wouldn’t mind the extra power at all, but it’s not worth it to jump into a car that’s only 4 years newer than the one I’m currently driving.

Sport suspension, steering wheel, seats, etc. The seats and steering wheel make a huge difference to me as I’ve got a long-ass commute that I can do on back roads if I preferred. The feel and grip of the steering wheel makes a world of difference believe it or not (at least for me it does). I really miss having a manual transmission in my daily driver, but at the moment this seems convenient. Honestly I don’t think I’ll be purchasing it, I’m more in it for the appraisal on my E46 and just finding something to do for an hour or two Friday.

O2 sensor wouldn’t be an issue for me, but that does sounds like quite a list of BS to deal with. Also, boo and hiss on run flats.

The best part about the battery change is that they told my wife that they had to change it because they needed to “reprogram” the computer to accept the new battery... $400 for the pleasure of them doing that, I was so pissed at my wife for not calling me first.

Sounds like they ripped her off.

I just hit 77k in mine yesterday. Nice car, mines been reliable so far. Honestly you should just hold out for a manual.. They really aren’t hard to find. There are a shit ton of E90’s in the DMV area, everyone drives them haha. $16k is a good budget too, there are a few 335d’s in that budget as well. As an E90 owner, I’ll give you some advice. Try to find a car with the most options possible. Mine is relatively bare with just heated seats and nav.
But yeah, any questions about the E90 just lemme know. I did lots of research on them before I purchased.

But I’m no good with delayed gratification! I wants it now! This one seems to have a good option list going for it, but I would love to find one with the HK stereo.

True, but I did just find a 328xi wagon with sport seats and steering wheel in Annapolis for $17k, so there is that. Auto, though.

Just as another opinion, I had an E92 335i and it had the high pressure fuel pump go out on it, but aside from that, never gave me any problems.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 14:29 |

I heard those were a constant issue on the earlier models. But this might not be a thing now, since I may have found an ‘05 ZHP sedan.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 14:31 |

Mine was a 2009 and I only had it happen once, but I’ve heard of others having multiple issues. I believe it was only an issue on the turbo motors, but I could be wrong about that.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 14:43 |

It was one the turbo motors, you are correct.

They are going to give you peanuts for your e46 - like what? $3000? $2500 trade in? Good luck and let us know what happens. How’s the carfax?

Probably $3,500 for it. The carfax is apparently clean, but it depends on how it looks in person.

I have the same year and same specification. Bought with 52k miles for $17k. In over 20k miles of driving, have had only two non-standard maintenance issues: rear LED taillights malfunctioned and needed replacement modules (evidently a common issue) and I seem to be getting a vibration through the steering wheel under moderate braking. Have tried replacing rotors and pads but has not resolved. Getting wheels straightened this weekend because the combination of bad NYC area roads and OEM RFTs have bent the wheels.
Would caution against keeping RFTs on. With run flats the ride is very stiff. The RWD Sport package models have a lowered suspension and there is not that much compliance. I bought non-RFT winter tires but in retrospect wish I had just taken a chance on all seasons so I wouldn’t still be dealing with RFTs in the summer.
But agree the Sport package is worth it for the sport seats, steering wheel, paddles, and glossy black window trim. The E90’s standard steering wheel was pretty awful but the Sport’s is fantastic.
Idle is oddly rough for a BMW straight six and I hear this is a common complaint as well. I’m considering replacing the spark plugs to see if that resolves.

Have you had any issues with steering wheel vibration under braking, or surprisingly high vibration idle?
![]() 07/08/2015 at 17:03 |
|
No vibration under heavy braking, and I’ve never noticed a high vibration idle.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 17:07 |

Do you have an N51 or N52? These engines are supposed to be inherently balanced. I wonder if it has something to do with Valvetronic and/or CARB emissions equipment - I actually have the N51 CARB variant with the 3 stage intake, extra cats, yada yada. When you give it gas and move off the engine seems to smooth right out. Just doesn’t like idling in the 600-800 rpm range.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 17:16 |
|
N52, it’s incredibly smooth. Mine is a little loud on idle when it’s freezing outside. It’s impressive, wind it out to over 6k RPM and just let off the throttle.. Still smooth!

I literally looked at that car today.. I went to check out this M3 at a dealer across the street. I ended up going to look at this E46 ZHP they had and noticed this beige 335i... Manual! Looked clean.
![]() 07/08/2015 at 18:37 |

I appreciate the insight. Also yeah, rough idle is pretty much normal from my experience. Everyone develops some sort of issue with it.

Dude, dont wait ‘til friday, put your e46 in CL ASAP for $4800, some lowballer will offer $4000 - SOLD! More $ than the dealer will give you for sure.

![]() 07/30/2015 at 08:44 |

Didn’t get a damn thing. Took my car in for service instead, and they gave me a low trade in figure. Plus, I should just wait for a manual 328 else I’ll be regretting it with each car payment I make.

I fuckin’ told you dude. But yes, hold on to the manual. its worth it.
